Speedlining
« on: May 30, 2008, 04:46:07 pm »
I have been speaking today to aquafactors www.afd-aquafactors.co.uk/ who have quoted me £495.00 plus VAT to speedline my Vauxhall Combo whilst they fit a tank (which is extra to the price for the speedlining)

I also noticed this thread

proper speedlining costs £500+

but isnt speed lining just water-proofing the vehicle with protectakote?

£600 to do that seems mighty steep in my opinion or am I missing something?

Done five vans so far with Protectakote.  No probs whatsoever.  Try Cleaningspot - they sell it cheaper than Protectakote themselves ;D

No.

It's a different product and a good one.

I would rather sell protectakote though :)  A few hours work over a weekend and you can have a great job done and save hundreds.

Please, please folks DON't use black protectakote. It does the job great but it looks orrible. Cheer yourselves up and have a nicer looking van inside by spending a fiver or so more and get a nice colour of protectakote.

Speedliner is a much much better quality product, the price you were quoted is to much haggle with them on it.£600 is the most they`ll get for doing it,there will be some movement on the price try going for £300 + vat and see what they say.

This is the stuff you want.

www.rhinoliningsuk.co.uk

I see it on tv where they painted a building in this stuff and blew the building up the rhinolining held the building together.

They also coated a pickups flat bed and blew that up the pickup was all in bits except for the flatbed which they coated and it held together.

Not that we are likely to encounter explosions in our job but just shows the strenth of the stuff.

I used black for protecta coat, but I've got a mint green van (yea I know, terrible) so the only thing that looked semi good is black. I've got the rubber mat for in the back though, cut a hole out for the tank cage. Looks neat now.

We have applied Speedliner, Ameron and Protecta-kote.

To apply Speedliner correctly requies a large amount  of prepairation the outside of the vehicle needs to be masked up with poly sheeting and paper masking to prevent overspray getting onto the bodywork or glass etc. The inside of the vehicle require the same treatment, the vehicle floor then needs sanding down to remove any gloss on the paint, any timber floooring or blemishes on the floor need to be removed eg. glue, rust spots, concrete (in the case of 2nd hand builders vans its not unusual for this preperation to take a full day! then a primer coat needs to be applied by spray gun allowing it to dry to the correct amount then two top coats of speedliner need to be applied. The masking is then removed any blemishes are then worked on to remove them. The vehicle then has to wait to dry out prior to fitting any equipment (in the winter this can take 24 hours +). All the spray equipment has to then be cleaned this takes easily over an hour ( two spray guns, jets, hopper etc.)
We were charging £350.00 for a small van and up to £500.00 for a LWB Sprinter or Transit, the cost of the speedliner, thinners, sanding discs, masking polythene/paper,masking tape, protective erquipment - disposable overalls, air fed mask, over shoes, gloves etc.
capital investment payback on the air compressor, guns, air extractor etc. means their is very little profit in doing the work - no more than £75.00 and a member of staff is tied up for about two days.
Thats why the cost is what it is -
To carry out protecta-kote correctly you still need to mask up the inside, rub down and prepair the surface and apply two to three coats but it can be carried out with through away tools.

All in all Speedliner is tougher but it is also much more tempremental and far greater  health and safety care is needed and  you need to mix it with a profesional paint mixer also it is supplied as a two pack epoxy that contains Iscocyanates (cyanide).
Appearance wise Protekta-kote can look just as nice if time is spent on preparation and I think it is extremly good value for money.
