I've just found a message on my machine asking me if I can clean the inverted V-shaped thingys on the end of a lady's house. I guess that she means the boards on the gable end.

I guess that there is an alternative name to "inverted V-shaped thingys" and I'd like to know what it is before I call her back.

I can just imagine the conversation when I ask her about these inverted V-shaped thingys etc.

Here's a picture of what I mean, just in case there are a number of inverted V-shaped thingys that I could be referring to ...

Hey, Lee ... that's GR8! Where did you get that definition from?

It would be dead useful for someone to put together a list of all these terms like jamb; soffit; barge boards etc.

I don't know about you guys, but I feel like a right Wally when customers use terms that I should know and don't know.

Up until a few weeks ago I didn't know the difference between a capping and a finial on a conservatory. Felt like a right d**k head when a customer put me right.

I know what a finial is (Fancy decorative thingymajig on top on con roof) but what is a capping?? Is it the end bit (usually a spikey thingymajig) of the finial??  :

The capping is properly called a ridge capping - and is the decorative repeating fleur-de-lys and cross thing. The finial is the spikey bit at the end.

I'm going to make it a project to collect these terms together with drawings and/or photos and make them available to colleagues in an ebook. I'll start a new thread later asking for contributions and put it together over the coming days/weeks.
