I have been employing sub-contractors for some time but I am considering making the jump to proper employment for one lucky person LOL. I will still use sub contractors for some of my larger work.

Any advice at all greatly received, especially regarding tax, NI and how people pay their staff regarding by the hour or work done or by bonus etc.

Perhaps pay them by percentage of all work done?  The more efficient they become the higher the percentage (within reason?)

Maybe this only works well if you are working as one team though, rather than separate?

there are so many things that change when you employ it is untrue under 5 staff is less of a head ache.

some pay a flat rate p/h some min wage plus commision, others flat rate and bonus, every business is different only you will know what suits your business.
One thing I would say is to keep staff you have to look after them, subbies are totally differnt kettle of fish, I have done both and still do.

For tax advice ask someone that is qualified to give the correct details I could say what I would I do and some thing could be wrong in others eyes, I ask direct to IR on things like this as I dont want to do it wrong.

Ring HMRC and ask them. Then register as an employer. Theyll send you a CD rom which will do all your PAYE, payroll and complete all of the forms required.

Its a superb FREE piece of kit.  

Theres even a FREE course to get you started if you are unsure.

may just use that cd then, or give to accountant and let them do it if it saves £100 deletes some of my costs result.

Did you take it off the figure you had to pay or have your requested for a cheque to be sent to you.
It is not tax free belive me as we have been taxed against the incentives for the past couple of years....check it out :)
