Help with steamway burner
« on: March 18, 2008, 04:30:59 pm »
Hi all,

had a problem with the burner on the steamway4200 we bought recently,  when switched on it makes all the right noises and the red light comes on when the trigger is pulled but no heat at all.

Was working ok yesterday and the tank is full of kerosene,!

Not used a truckmount with a separate burner before, so a bit new to me, just wondered if anyone had an idea what the problem may be?

regards
steve

the noise you are hearing is the fan.

its either the flow switch, the fuel filter, the ignitors or the fuel pump.

unless you know what you are doing go to a pressure washing company and have them have a look.

What make of burner is it? Lavor?

If its kicking in when you use the water but no heat it may be the fuel not lighting.

Try the changing the starter motor (like you find in neon ceiling lights).

Check you havent a fuel leak or air getting into the line.

Are the ignition cables firmly secured.

Other problems - (more in deepth). Either of the two electrodes have gone. The burner nozzles may be blocked. Transformer (if you have one) may have blown)

Had same problem with mine last week,

Perfect one day , not the next  a smell of deisel had me thinking a leak, but no leak .

had somebody take a look ,and the inside chamber was soaked with deisel, it had not been igniting , a good clean out , some fire cement in the bottom to repair and instand heat ,although it was half an hour burning the eccess fule out of the system.
Geoff.

Mike the noise he may be hearing could be the fan on the inverter, I thought the same untill it was taken out of van, the fan does not work unless the water is flowing.

Prodry, just read your reply,

the inverter, can be checked to test voltage . see if it is failing to get power apperently they can trip ,
but some so I am lead to believe can reset themselves.

it does sound as if the fuel is not igniting, there is definitely a very strong smell of fuel coming from it!

we took the can out to fill with kerosene last night and then replace and just wonder whether this has any bearing, as it was perfect yesterday?

if you are getting a strong smell of diesel the the fuel is'nt igniting.

I had this last year, i needed the square block box changing that the spark plug leads come out of. basically there was no spark betreen the electrodes(ignitors as I call them)

TAKE IT TO A PRESSURE WASHER AGENT WHO KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING.

the more you poke at it the more you will have to pay to get it fixed.

The worst case you could have,  one hell of a fire on your hands if it desides to egnite with all that un spent fuel lieing at the bottom of the burner.

There's no local pressure washer agents near us  :(

Got a feeling its an air lock as it only happened after we refilled the tank last night, and had to disconnect the whole thing, so will have a try at bleeding the hoses!

Shame you arnt a little nearer,

the chap i used had the t/m out of the van burner to bits , resolved the problem , serviced the t/m fitted new fuel lines for burner and engine, exausted the engine through floor of van, greased all the blower dtected a vacuum leak and repaired. fitted back in van . made me 3 coffees and sandwices for lunch

£ 90 the lot

anyone not to far away he will fix practicly any thing and reasonably.

He managed to repair a high pressure fuel pump on a merc sprinter for me in the past, cannot be done insisted merc dealer, has to go away its immpossible .
next day fixed, still going strong . he simply stripped, made his own gaskets and seals a saving of around £200 what merc wanted

I remember having th hi bred and it would burn very 'rih' and throw flames out of teh topof my chimney on the van, the kids next door thought it was marvelous.

Dave may remember me having to change the 'ignitor' bought from dual pumps.

I remember it well Shaun,
The flames were great it was the black choking smoke that use to worry me.
Many a time I'd look out of the window and wander where on earth my van had gone. it was only when the smoke settled that i could see the van.

Some folks use to think it was a burger bar when the burner fired up, What dissapiontment on their faces when I told them it was carpet cleaning not a chip van!
Good old days they were.
