Check your oil level, maybe you have more than needed, failing that it could be crank case pressure to high causing the oil to blow back through the filter box!

Hi Dave
oil level is fine. Is crank case problem easily rectified?

Justin check to see that the breather pipe from the crank case to the air filter is clear, A tell tail sign of crank case pressure is oil leaks around the crank shaft!

( That's the bit behind the engine were the pulley is)
Whoo ;)

Just testing to see if your alert ;D

Cheers Dave

As you can tell I know nothing about engines, but I'm learning. I have just been told by the boys at SES that it could be head gasket what do you think?

its possible that if ur machine is facing a wall on a drive way or somethin like that, that when the engine is running, with it bein air cooled, they need to breath, and pull the fumes that bounce off the walls, think thats what hydramaster said, i changed a filter as routine service than had to change another one a week later, i had the van parked tight to a wall when doing a night club,
dont listen to dave ingrain, hes old, ugly, ugly and old ;D ;D

Justin,
Re my last post on thios subject. I still think its down to too much oil. If the dip stick is showing max when the engine is cold, i.e. first thing in the morning, then in my experience with that engine, you have too much oil in there and you need to drain off at least half a litre. Once the air filter is contaminated, even if it looks clean, its had it and you need to get a new one.

Cheers Dave,

Yes I think you are spot on! All seems ok, there is still a bit of oil residue in the air filter case, is this normal?

Justin,
No it needs to be clear of any oil residue, however this could just due to remainder of excess oil still on the inner lining of the breather tube.  The problem is when refilling with oil, when doing an oil change. It is a very slow drain and fill i.e.it takes forever for the oilk to get through to the crankcase, so the tendency if to overfill and the excess just gets sucked up into the air chamber and causes problems. I  switched to fully synthetic eventually and although expensive, it did run better and drained and refilled quicker.

Hi Dave

What else would cause oil in the filter case?
