just spoke to the lad across the road from me who had a quote from a doorstep caller on friday to clean his gutters , the price was £400 that works out at £200 for 2 sides both sides 12 mtrs each . he told them in a polite way to f-off  what a rip off , i wish i would have been in when they called .

This is a trading standards issue - report them/ get them notified on neighbourhood watch circulars etc.

nowt to do with trading standards....they just gave a quote for the work,a VERY highly priced quote but you cant stop em doing that.......if they quoted 80 quid ,did the job and THEN said the charge was 400 quid ,that is a matter for trading standards.......probly

thats the way i see it that a quote is nothing to do with trading standards , its just a high price quote a rip off prices .

You are sort of correct about the quote side.... However.... If they are highly over charging and a customer accepts the quote and even pays for the work. My understanding is that trading standards can then get involved or over charging..... There have been a few like that on Watchdog type progs in the past when people have realised afterwards that they have been "ripped off".
1 that springs to mind was a septic tank emptying service that were charging £250 - £300 when others in the area were charging around £80. Trading standards steped in and ordered them to reduce their prices as it was NOT in the customers favour to charge so much.

hmm....possibly but only a matter for TS if customer accepts quote and then kicks up a fuss,so nothing wrong in giving a high priced quote,but most custs would say get lost,unfortunate tho that somewhere ,someone will get stung for that price and probly more

You can charge whatever price you like, maybe not ethical , but its not illegal.

Thats why they tend to have lots of tv programmes on firms that charge extortionate prices, make the public aware and try to drive them out of business.

It also depends on the gutter clean. if it was just for a quick clear out then ok it is pricey. But if it is for a clear out, and upvc cleaning/restoring depending how bad they are could maybe take all day.

I've heard of £4 a metre for a clean out plus all the whites.

that's quite a low price, if for clearance, outer clean, and fascias and soffits and down pipes
If 12 metres to be done,  that's only £48.00

It does seem high, BUT they didn't get the job, so I really see no harm done. As for Trading Standards, they wouldn't want to know at this point. Their name says it all...standards, they would judge on a  job being done, not on a quote!
Not saying that the quote was a good one, but there are so many elements involved. When was this job last done..........10 years ago?? Then that is going to be one hell of a job to take on.  Can it just be fitted in when you are in that area, or is in on appt only? Are these guys VAT registered, if yes brings the nett price to £340.43 with the rest going to C & E.

found out gutter was fitted 18 months ago and its the team that fitted this are now back in the area and out canvassing to clean it i inspected the lads across the road and theres nothing in the gutters .
