scratched glass with wfp - any remedies?
« on: January 29, 2008, 03:38:49 pm »
A customer told me today that the last time I was at her house she noticed 'twirly scratch marks' after I left, on one of the windows. I've no reason to doubt it is from my brush. I can only presume I had a bit grit on the brush!
Is there a product I can use to take the scratches out ie T-cut for windows??

no, wet brushes dont scratch glass. The scratches where already there, only now the customer has spotted them and is blaming you.

well if you had a bit of grit on the brush it could have scratched the glass - very unlikely though.  You can use 00 wire wool (very very fine wire wool) to take the scratches out but be very careful with it and make sure you wet the glass first and during rubbing.

someone else on here though might have a better solution.

Jeff
I dont think she is trying to pass the blame to me. She was very apologetic when she was telling me and said that she didnt want me to think she was complaining but just wanted to let me know in case I damaged some other glass.
I offered to pay to get it replaced and do a free clean but she said there was no need.
I think it could well be me cos the window is over a conservatory and I need to clean it at an angle. Therefore to clean the glass at this angle I would use the brush in a circular fashion which is the same pattern as the scratches on the glass.
It is also likely that I extended the pole, then leaned it up against the brickwork before putting the brush on the glass. I could easily have picked up some grit from the brickwork.

Thanks Alan, I may try your method

I've used Glass Polish ( Halfords) on my windscreen. It acts like a 'T' Cut for glass. I bought it for a scratch caused by the wiper but this was too deep to remove, but it did take all the tiny swirls off the glass. Looked like a new screen (except for the deep scratch :()

If you do accept responsability worth a try, about £6  from Halfords.

I also have been accused of scratching glass....... not with the wfp, but with a squeegee and blade.

I told her the scratches must have been there before but because the sun is so low this time of year, she can see them.

She was ok with me but still believed I scratch the glass.

RO Sheen,

You sound like a decent chap, but a little naive.

Dip your brush into a bucket full of sand and try having a go at scratching your own windows.  I bet you can't.  It takes some effort to scratch glass.

On builder's cleans when there's concrete and plaster on the windows, a wet applicator doesn't scratch them;  usually; (I understand there's a possible problem with new glass that hasn't been manufactured properly - though I haven't came across it).

There could be a number of reasons for the scratches; and 'swirly scratches' sound to me like they've been cleaned with one of those green scrubbing pads you use for washing burnt off stuff from pans.  That'd scratch them.

Recently a customer of mine had the insides of her windows cleaned by her cleaner; and she used one of said pads; the windows were really badly scratched.

The only time I've ever scratched a window was with my ladders.

I would suggest that this window being above a conservatory is the reason its scratched. And I would add not by you. People lean out with a damp cloth / scrubber on very dirty windows and thats how they get scratched.

However If you do want to claim responsibility you can polish it out with a glass polishing machine and compound. It might be difficult above a conservatory though so consider removing the glass from inside first.

The "Polish creams" etc for cars are really just expensive cleaners that dont really work unless the scratches are very very shallow surface marks.

The link will give an idea of the process. Maybe good as an add on to your business?

When the glass has been cleaned WFP and becomes sterile all little imperfections in the glass will show up,i`ll bet the marks were there already but you just didn`t notice them.
