Got a call today from young mum baby had been sick , Already worked for her in the past and her mum and I have had several half decent referral's from the family as a whole I refused to take any money , is this good business or am I being daft as usual

its a difficult one, if you were in the area, with machine ready to rock and roll then great,

but if you travelled especially to do that job, then maybe not...

the argument is

you have taken xx amount for the day or week, and therefore this bit of free marketting may pay dividends in the future.

if you have reaped rewards from this client in the past and you know they are good jobs then, why not. proves the good samiratan still roams the earth in some form or another.

I know how you feel, worrying about being daft, but my "best" customer gave me 7 referral jobs worth about £900 in 2007, so when she wanted her lounge and stairs doing in early December I wdid it for free. This year already 2 more referrals, one for £140 and the other for £130.

I only do freebies as a reward, ie as a thank you, never as a please for more work!

I agree with Martin.

It also depends on how long the job took.

You can always be non-subtle if they try and pay you by telling them the reason you are not charging them.

The really nice thing about it though is that as you are the boss you can break your own rules.

But how would you have handled it if it had been an employee of yours who came back from the job and said they had exercised discression?

John not daft, you only think it is cos your slow at the minute.If you were mad busy getting in good money then doing it free would not even cross your mind.

Its always good PR and I guess you will get lots more recommedations/ work from it.
