Clear or black pvc hose
« on: November 23, 2007, 11:31:18 pm »
Is the black hose for poles better than the clear pcv type or are they just the same?

Sick to death of the pole hose getting knotted and tangled up, drives me mad. I always keep it coiled up in the van and a least once a week put it in hot water then cool down to help keep it easier to work with. The cold weather is making it worse the hose becomes very hard and less flexible.

Or any other tips or suggestions?

dont think it makes any difference some may say black absorbs heat quicker but temp of water going through is what matters in temps like today

I prefer clear PVC hose.

At the end of the day and sometimes once during the day I lay my hose out full length (17mtrs) and take note of the twist in it. If it's bad I'll untwist the end of the hose until it lays almost flat and then re-coil it. I coil it starting with large coils and gradually decrease the size of the coils. This way when I lay the coiled hose on the floor ready to use the coils are not all laying on top of each other. I take the smallest coil and lift it out or flick it over my head. This way the hose rarely gets tangled when I'm setting up.

Did'nt really have any probs up until the weather has got colder. Maybe it's just one of those things we have to put up with until it gets a bit warmer. I will try coiling the hose at different size loops see if that helps.

We have tried both types (Clear and Black) and whilst they are both meant to be similar, we have found that the black tangles more easily.

The only real solution is to replace the hose at the start of the winter with new hose. You can buy a 30m reel of hose fairly cheaply and it is a good idea to have a reel spare for emergencies anyway.

Another thing that helps is to store your pole hose in a neat coil when not in use. We supply unique stretchy VelcroŽ straps which are ideal for this purpose.

A couple of pics for clarrification of my previous post.

The upper coil looks neater but will tangle more readily when setting up as the individual coils settle into each other when lying flat.
The lower coil looks more messy but will cause less tangling when lifting the hose out from the middle as the individual coils tend to lay inside each other.

Coiling like this takes a little getting used to but is worth it when you get the hang of it.

Hope this helps. It's certainly saved me some time setting up and made me feel more like I knew what I was doing and less of an idiot standing there for ages untangling a mass of hose.

I use the black hose (as with ionics stuff but not from them). Personally I find it just a bit tougher and less likely to kink. I use it on all my stuff and remove the clear stuff straight away. However like most things we all will have differing opinions.

I've found that the black hose is a little more lightly to get tangled with itself but the clear hose is a lot more lightly to get caught up with other stuff like bushes.

The black hose I think wears better but it seems to have more of a memory so if you coil it tight it will remember that and be a pain.  If you coil a hose tightly on a regular basis I think your in for trouble.  All in all I prefer the black hose for the pole.

Simon.

Just shows that everyone is different as I bought a long length of Ionics black hose to try on my own poles, I really did not get on with it. The fact that it kept coiling itself up, meant that I was having to untangle it too often.

I've tried the clear stuff and don't like it because it tangles too easily. I've tried the black stuff (both Ionics and Gardiners), it doesn't tangle so easily, recoils easily but restricts the flow of water as it has a much smaller inner diameter. Now I compromise and use 5mm internal Streamline lite 5mm because it doesn't tangle up, it recoils easily and is a happy medium between the clear and black hose allowing for a sufficient flow of water. Another advantage with the Streamline lite 5mm hose is it's a highly visible yellow in colour so less of a trip hazzard to the passing public.

Hi Wayne,

We have stopped selling the black hose as it was just not as popular as the clear.
We have also switched our pole hose to a 5mm ID hose as it is quite a bit lighter and still has a good flow rate.
