Really down to choice, but jumping form a rug doctor I guess you want to go for a electric portable, and theres loads of choice out there,

Twin vac 135psi is entry level prices stat at £1000 up to triple vac high pressure machine with very high perofmance running around the £2500-3000 bracket.

I started out with a budget portable and as I went on made it my back up machine and bought a better machine every 1-2 years.

A entry level machine is still a good jump up from the rug doctor though, try and find a supplier who will let you have a demo of one at there store.

You are not a newbie to carpet cleaning.
Now with experiance, and particularly if you have a good budget, I would personally jump to a good portable, skip the intro machines, you been there and done it (although nothing wrong with them and if budget is an issue then go for one).
Because of personal experiance I can recomend the CFR500 Pro and the Scorpion. With the hoses, wand and hand tool you will need, both will come around or above the £3k mark, but go for a deal as a package.
As Paul King said - find a supplier that will let you have a go, or a friendly owner somewhere near to you (Swindon is it).
