My first protecting job
« on: October 26, 2007, 04:41:06 pm »
Hi   alll   '  Got a job booked in for Tuesday the customer has asked me to protect a 12*12 deep pile wool rug and 2 three seaters . I,ve got a top end price for cleaning these items so I have told custy that I will protect them for what it costs me . I have just had delivered 5lt of solugard off solutions, never protected before so any advice would be appreciated, How much product do I need , Is it alright to apply it with my battery operated sprayer ( also off solutions )

Thanks in advance John

The instruxtions should tell you what you need to know but watch out for over spraying in one spot and when you leave carpet at Acidic side of PH neutral as Akaline does not relate well to the flurocarbons. When you have sprayed use a pile brush to spread even and penetrate pile. Tell custy to stay off as long as poss (ideally 24 hours but this is hardly ever practical)

Solugard must be applied to detergent free carpets and fabrics. So clean with a micro-splitter. I believe that M Power and Nemesis are also suitable, but I'd advise checking first.  DO NOT USE A DETERGENT RINSE. DO NOT USE AN ACIDIC RINSE. Acid rinses still have detergency. Freshwater rinse only.

As for sprayers, read up on the required pressure for application. As far as I'm aware, the sprayer you mentioned is suitable.  Solugard, I gather, is applied sparingly in one direction, leave for ten minutes then apply in opposite direction. Read the labels for instructions.  If you must use the same sprayer, as long as you've only used an M/S in it, just rinse through with plain water first.  Thoroughly wash and dry your pile brush first if you do not have one dedicated to protector.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Did'nt know that thought it was the same as all other guards. Thanks for putting me right Ken (and more importantly not sending someone off doing wrong thing).

At that price I'm guessing it is diluted. I'll see if I can find it via solutions site. If not you can email solution through their website and Nick will no doubt tell you what you need to know.

John, may I ask the suggested value of the rug you are working on.  If it was me I wouldnt apply any type of protection to it.   Particularly if it is that deep a pile as unless you can apply the retarding to all of each fibre then it is a waste of time and you are doing an injustice to your client.  You can apply it so that it adheres to all of each fibre but to do this it needs to be taken away to be done as it cant be done insitu.  To do this to your rug would be £720:00, a reasonable "security" for your clients expensive textile.

Best, Dave.

P.S. I have to also say this and hope it helps.

There is never a good reason to apply protection or anything else for that matter at cost.  We are in this business to provide a service to our clients and for that privilige they pay us for it.  If you do it for free, half price,  or cost do you still offer a call out service which should be standard practice after applying protection.  If you have done it and not charged accordingly then each time you go back you are at a loss, again.

If the textile is worth a boat load of money as you have suggested then it should cost a boat load of money to clean, maintain or do whatever you need to do to it.  More to the point if its worth a large sum then your client will want it maintained and now as is you are going to have to maintain it for free.

John I used to use Solugard all the time a couple of years ago, its a good protector on fabrics but I found it wanting on carpets.I prefere to use Chemspecs protector on carpets and rugs.

If using Solugard, then Kens advice should be used regarding fresh water rinses.

Paul, is this because you don't get to brush it in? Obviously thats not so much an issue on upholstery but on a tufted pile for example I can't see how you would get very good coverage#

A really  informative post , I don't Know what this rug is worth but its in a nice house , nice area' nice customer what your saying is get top doller for cleaning the rug then tell custy any spill or accident don't hesitate to call me. so custy is not paying me for just cleaning her rug she is paying for 360 day a year call out service

Yes you should always brush the protector in.
I dont use Solugard on carpets because I found after testing them weeks/months later that the suspension qualities were not as I require and other protectors where better.

John, generally you dont offer a maintenance of a year after a clean.  It is usually offered after a protection service.  Thats why protection should be done at full price.  If you are going to discount something then discount the cleaning service.  To go back 2 or 3 times maybe to sort out the odd "spill" is commendable but simply not good for your business.

Best, Dave

Some people will take advantage of you r good nature if you keep going back for nothing.

Dave the protector you was telling me about sounds good and I didn't think it was that expensive I thought for the quality it wasvery fairly priced but not cheap.

Thanks for your experience and advice again.
