DI after Merlin.
« on: October 01, 2007, 08:55:00 pm »
Is it worth having a DI canister after the Merlin RO unit, some people say it`s worth it and some don`t agree.WC`s with Merlins what does it bring your water down to before resin.

Unless your TDS before the merlin is very low, the product water will still have a reading anywhere between 5 and 20. Some ppl clean windows with this,.. but the closer to 000 you get, the less problems you will have. I'd definitely recommend using a DI after the merlin.

My tds can give a reading from the merlin at 3 in the morning but in the evening it seems to go higher...5-9. I have a di unit attatched. The final result a big fat zero.

Waist output is about 50% on 65 psi but this is an average as quality of water goes between 260 to 300.

I've just started using a Merlin.  It is bringing the TDS down to somewhere between 006 and 008 (from 250).  Although Merlin's work better with pressure above 40 PSI, mine seems to be working reasonably at between 30 and 40 PSI.  It is better to work with 000 TDS or as close as you can get to it so I reckon a DI canister is advisable.  Failing that, at least have one attached to your van mount.
I am running two DI cannisters after the RO.  I had them anyway so might as well use them.

I wasn`t talking about using a DI canister after merlin for work i know that LOL,i was talking about during production. My tap water is about 250-270 so if the merlin gets it down to anything near 10 the resin in the van should last months.

Why have resin in the van at all??? I've my RO into a DI,.. DI into a static tank, With an inline TDS meter so it's easy to check each day. Because its feeding a static tank, the TDS out of the DI can reach 003 or 004 and the tank will still read 000. The water that goes into my van always reads 000.
I've heard a few experiences of ppl who DI in the van forgetting to check the water each day,.. and then getting 20 or 30 complaints in one day when the resin goes,.. as resin does seem to die rapidly when its time is up.
The less gear I have to put in the van the better,.. I've too much stuff in there already without a DI cylinder as well!

I think it's useful to have a DI in the van as well in case you're working a long way from base and need more water.  OK so it's more expensive purifying hard tap water that way but at least you can get the job finished.
