Why is my pump cycling?
« on: February 17, 2007, 08:43:55 pm »
75psi sureflo + varistream.  Working perfectly until now.  Changed hose from half inch to 8mm microbore couple of months ago, so a little more pressure needed, adjusted the little dial inside the varistream up a notch or two, all was fine, now the pump is cycling instead of obeying the varistream.
Where am I going wrong?

Probably not a good question on a saturday night, sorry guys!

First check that your battery is fully charged. A failing battery will cause cycling.
My pump will cycle if I turn the Varistream up too high, it's down to the extra resistance of micro bore coils on the reel, building up back pressure.
Try running all your hose out, if this cures your problem, you have found the cause. I can't use a higher setting than the 12 o'clock position without my pump cycling.
You may have to turn the inside dial up even more to overcome the back pressure.
As you have already disconnected the pump pressure switch,[or should have]
Turning the Varistream inside dial up to maximum would in fact give you a higher PSI than your pump rating.
Williams's test the Varistream with a 100 psi pump, with the inside dial set at maximum, It will in fact run at a connector bursting 130 psi. Dai

Thanks for that Dai boyo!
I don't think my sureflo pump has it's own pump pressure switch?
I do run 100m of hose, maybe on the reel it's creating more back pressure, do you think?
I have the varistream outside dial at about 11 o clock, maybe I'll try the inside one up a bit.
Thanks

I think you've got your answer PJ, but for what it's worth any changes to the system changes the pressure. My new pole has finer jets and thinner internal bore tubing than the last one and my set up (100psi + vari) will cycle at anything over 12 o'clock now - but the flow is just as good.
It's a game of three halves!

I had the same problem when I swapped the tricoflex hose on my trolley for new minibore hose. I turned the varistream dial right up too and my pump was cycling and I wasn't getting much water out of the new microbore hose. After constantly running the pump for some considerable time it all worked out fine and I was able to turn the dial down to about 9 o'clock on the varistream dial. I think it was because the varistream dial was set too high and partly because the minibore hose was new!

What setting.?.the dial inside of your varistream, the little one on the circuit board?  Not the outside one.

I could ask Williamsons, but thought a few of us may learn here.

I turned my blue dial up a couple of notches because the varistreem did nothing at the higher settings on the main dial. Be carefull with the blue dial, I bent mine and squashed it into the circuit board luckily it pulled out straight again! I'm no expert it's just what worked for me.

You will notice from my first post, I had already turned the little blue dial inside up 2 notches, and the outside dial to an acceptable level for the flow I like, but when I turn off at the pole end my pump is now cycling non stop, no intermittent pauses?

Turn it back down one notch. I get this sometimes too. It always stops if I disconnect the pole from the hose reel though. There must be a small leak somewhere, it doesn't need much of a leak to keep the pump running. Dai

Mine does this if when i push the on button sometimes i accidently turn up the varistream, and the pump begins to cycle, making the water come put of the brush head in spurts.

So i have to go back to the van to reset at the 11 oclock position.i use 100mtr microbore as you do.
