Police registered?
« on: February 05, 2007, 08:32:50 pm »
Is there a way of registering with the local police so that you can build confidence in your customers by telling them (or putting it on your stationery) that you are registered with the Police.

(BTW - Being "known to the Police" is not the same! ;D)
It's a game of three halves!

It's the best seller for me having a license in Scotland. As soon as I say we are Police checked the answer is YES.

the CRB do this but you cannot do it as a self employed trader...an employing organisation needs to apply to become a registered body to carry out checks on applicants and verify their ID details before sending the applicants form off to be processed.

I used to do this for social workers when I worked for SWIIS UK Ltd

here is some more info:

forgot to mention...if a CRB is a requirement of a licencing procedure...then the authority issuing the licence are a registered body and are entitled to process CRB applications from the self employed who require licences...so in Scotland, self employed window cleaners can get a CRB as it is a licencing authority imposed requirement.
In England, taxi drivers also get CRB clearance even though they are self employed.

Window cleaners who are self employed in England or Wales will not get a CRB certificate.

Why would you need to do this?
Do you look really dodgy Malc? ;D

No-ones ever not trusted me. I get left in houses and all sorts.
I wish they wouldn't trust me so much.
If they were to lose something then I would automatically become a suspect!  :-\

I got locked in a pub while she went out yesterday!
Not as great as it sounds...
I only had two windows left to do, and she was 15 minutes.  ::)
I left my bucket outside too, and my washer was a bit dry.
Had to run it under the tap!

I was going to help myself to a pickled egg, but they looked a bit manky. ;D

Hi Malc,

This is something that I looked into in preparation of taking on employees.

Now im quoting from memory but im pretty sure the person themselves can take ID and £20 to a police station and receive a copy of what is held on them.

Which Im going to stipulate as a condition of employment and as long as there are no suprises on there I will refund them the £20

Hope this helps

Alistair

Anyone ever considered joining something like this?

www.approvedtradesmen.com

They dont seem to cater for window cleaners but my mate whos a painter is with them and gets loads of work and has built a reputation for being recommended.

Maybe its worth asking if they'll add a window cleaning section?

Hello Malc

The local police station here needed a window cleaner. They asked me to quote and said they would need to run a security check on me -- which I did`nt mind. I got the job also also the credential "police authority approved contractor" If its seen in the add or you drop it in converstion it tips the balance. Its well worth getting if you can.

All the best.

Thanks Jack, so could I just go into the copshop and get this done over the counter even if I'm not working for them?

no...you get police checked by them if you are to become an approved contractor for the Police.
If you go into the police station independantly and ask for a police check certificate, they will refer you to the CRB.

Hello Malc
I will ask my contact at the local police HQ the way forward for a shiner in your position, how they can be a"approved contractor". I will do it tommorrow and let you no what she says.

Rob,

What does being a 'gvernor' at a local school entail?

Please don't say it's something to do with educating our children, otherwise I'm going to have to point out the 'five-at-least' spelling and grammatical errors in your two-lined post!

I know this ain't a spelling and grammar forum... but well!!!

I got a letter from my local trading standards who do an approved tradesman publication. They do a police check and a credit check on your company. It was just shy of £60.00 per year all included. Ask at yours if they do a similar scheme. I didn't bother, but if you feel it would help you then why not.
