Knocked the finial off a con roof
« on: November 20, 2006, 10:38:06 pm »
I've managed to dislodge the bit at the end of the finials that sticks, up on a conservatory roof, it's not damaged, it just needs reattaching. Any suggestions on how I get up there to do it, & no I don't have access to any conservatory roof ladders.

THe worst of it is it's my next door neighbour.

I managed to do that once Paul.
I replaced it in a way that didn't feel totally safe to me.  I leaned my ladder up against the conservatory guttering and dug the ladder well into the ground to stop it seesawing.  I then spread my weight on the roof and stretched up and plopped it back on.  The roof was polycarbonate.
After doing this, I vowed that I would never do it again because I did not feel comfortable with it.  You may be able to achieve it if someone is footing the ladder, if the roof is not glass, and if you place the ladder where there is the least distance between finial end and conservatory guttering.
I'm not recommending this method but just saying that it is possible.  I'm a very overweight guy and I managed it.

It's the decorative bit that runs along the top of many conervatories.  They often have a piece on the end that sticks up.  I believe that the "piece" is what Paul is referring to.

If the customer knows you have done this, and its a fairly new conservatory thats been fitted by a company, ie within 10 years, get her to call them to come and put it on as if they are fitted correctly, they should not fall off!

How about one of those jet backpacks that James bond used?

Maybe HSS do them.

An even more creative way may be to use something like a grab and reach pole,  the kind you see on long handled cutters used for lopping trees / high plants.  If you could get a grip on the end of it you should be able to place it back on correctly.  Just and idea.

Or,  thread a loop of wire or heavy duty twine through a hollow pole.  working from your ladder you could place the loop over the top,  take up the slack and lassoo it,  which should give you enough scope to replace it correctly as well.

Thanks Shiner I think that is probably my only course of action, my neighbour is trying to get hold of company that put it up, as you are right they shouldn't really come off so easy. This thing wasn't even glued on, it has two channels that it slides on to the roof to secure it, would of thought they could of put some mastic on it, they normally manage to smear enough on the windows when installing conservatories.!!!!

Oh right.  I had always thought that the decorative strip next to it was the finial.  Learned something new today.

Oh no,  :o :o

I done this once, thats why I allways stay weel away from the finial.

Not that its any help to you, but I climbed it and crawled up the roof frames. They were wet at the time and it was very dodgy. I dont recommend you take the same action, especially if its glass.

I doubt you could do it with wire and a pole they slide on little runners and it would be very difficult.

Good Luck ;)

paul i knocked finial off two weeks ago,and i like shiner managed to put it back with a bit of stretching but i would not do it again as i nearly slipped, the other way to put it back if it was the same as mine and it just slipped back would be to borrow a gripper, disabled people use them, and council workers also use them to pick rubbish up off the streets, grip the finial and stretch out and slip it back in place,i hope this helps.

Paul.

Tie some 2x2 to the end of your ladder, rest the 2x2 on the bars, get a mate to foot the ladder & up you go, sorted.  ;)
