Anyone use extension poles instead of ladders?
« on: November 08, 2006, 07:39:50 am »
Just wondering if anyone is skilled enough to just use an extension pole for their work as an option instead of ladders or water fed pole?

I reckon its do-able with the right kit.

(We're talking bedroom window height)

I use extension poles a lot but I have mostly shops so its diferent to doing normal house windows.

Hi,

I clean an entire 1st floor of a nusing home with extention pole, but will say they are a one stroke down method with sills that dont stick out to far. I cut an applicator to size. A handle with a neck does help to get over the sills on the downward stroke.
With 100 windows it is by a long way much quicker & easier this way.

I do two large bungalows with pole and I have them to do before christmas,
I will get some photo's taken and post them here, to show it is easy to do once you get the hang of it,

if I didn't use my pole with these two bungalows I would have to use my ladders.

Used to do all upstairs windows(houses) with a pole from the US many years ago, cant remeber the name of the darn thing now, but used to have a curve at the business end, which enabled you with practice to squeegee the glass quite well, had to be careful when soaping up the glass not to go right to the top or touch frame, or else you would spend an age trying to get rid of runs and drips, think it may have been called the pro curve, we got them from J Racenstein i think!!

Rob

That's the one I was thinking of when I said if you have the right kit.

I seen a video demo of it somewhere but I can't find it now.
Anyone seen that and know where it is?

Windows 2 clean, im in the US and we quite often use a pole to wash windows that are hard to get with a ladder or if the house sets up right we will do the whole house that way its a little harder than doing commercial windows as most house windows dont have a deep edge to guide the squeegee but you get use to doing it with minimal detailing
A long time ago we had a couple of the Procurve poles and couldnt seem to get on with them at all, and without boasting thats from someone who uses a 30 ft pole for squeeging almost every day
For the deeper ledges we just use a ledger and for normal windows we use a swivel squeegee and swivel washer,Just wet the glass, Pull across the top of the glass to get the water away from the top edge then pull straight down with a stutter at the top( a stutter is pull down about 1/2 an inch and without letting the squeegee off the glass push it back up to the top edge without letting the rubber turn over on itself then pull down again this eliminates any drips)That took longer to type than it does to do ;D

Pat,

Water fed poles have really caught on over here but am I right in saying that extension poles are used more than water fed poles in the US?

Are water fed poles a common site over there or are you guys masters of the extension pole?

The first time i ever saw a wfp was about a week ago when a commercial customer asked me if I wanted it as it was a failed experiment getting his own people to wash the windows, Im yet to see one being used but there are a few on the US forums that use them,
There not much use for residential around here as most windows have storm window exteriors and if its above ladder height on commercial then we just rope it
I did accept the Pole a 45ft Tucker pole and I have a few old DI bottles in the warehouse from when we washed windows using pure water back in the eighties so when the spring kicks around you never know maybe I will give it a try

I think extension poles are overlooked a little over here.

People tend to think it would do a rubbish job and so don't bother trying.

I never used a pole until I got into shop work.
