My battery needs a boost
« on: October 02, 2006, 07:27:02 pm »
hi all,

I have a split charged wfp system fitted to my van, so each time I start up and drive the wfp battery is charged, and when the engine is switched off, only the dedicated leisure battery is used.

However, it seems that I do not do enough driving between jobs or to get home, I say this because my leisure battery is running extremely low. The longest distance I will do between home and work is around 10 miles, and 2-3 miles during the day to get me around the village I'm working in.

Therefore I am in need of finding a way boosting the charge of my battery, I presume there is simple device for it??

Thanks,

Simon

Yes.
Some will baffle you with science, but all you need is a charger that has a facility for charging leisure batteries on it.  (assuming you are using a leisure battery).
Get one from Halfords, ask for a charger for the above, or caravan battery charger.
no need to pay more than £40.00
It will switch to safe charge and keep you topped up every 2 or 3 days on short distances.

thanks

Would I be ok using a trickle chargers, as once the battery is full, I will have no problems using the battery all day, its just getting the charge up to full to start of with?

I have similar problems luckily I have a booster battery (from before I got the split charger installed)

Now when the leisure battery gets low I just link up the booster.
Which can easily be recharged at home.

The booster I bought was about 40 squid from argos .

You also have the booster handy for emergencies

Make sure you have a charger that has a facility specifically for leisure batteries.
If yours isn't, then get one.  An ordinary charger, even on trickle, can "overcook" your battery.  You'll get some who know all about these things and they'll blind you with science, but then they'll tell you to spend far too much on the perfect choice!
What you need is a charger that will supply the right charge, go to Halfords, they will have one in stock or get you one for about £40.00 max.  It has a switch on the charger which says for leisure/caravan batteries.  It has to be right.

Simbag,

I have never bothered with a split charge relay because I dont do enough mileage.

I was down at my local auto electrician last month to get him to test how much amps I was useing with both pumps running. He suggested I get a split charger, Then as soon as I mentioned my weekly mileage he said it would be pointless having one fitted.

I have 2 x 110 amp batterys in the van. If two of us put in a good 8 hr day I allways charge the battery up at night time that I have been useing all day.

The other battery is their for cover.

I now have a brilliant B/Charger. The best on the market. Money well spent in my opionion.

Nel.

The split charger was fitted as standard with the system. I went out today and picked up a battery charger. Don't really know what the difference between them all is, but the one I got was advertised as car/leisure battery charger. Was only £25. Was this a false economy, as Pj did mention £40?

What is your charger Nel, and what did it cost?

Thanks

I had the same problem with our estate car in the winter, I bought a 12 trickle charge solar panel off Ebay that just attaches to the battery and you stick it on the windowscreen. was only about £15 worked a treat.
