HI everyone, I use a wheelie bin I aquired so to speak, its my static container, when I got it it was full of nasty stuff and oil, it had been dumped, I scrubbed it out with ammonia, seemed to do the trick, I filter with a merlin, I get a high tds by most of your standards about 26-30 tds before di, my tap is about 380- 400 tds.
When I fill I get about 27 tds average, but I think the bin is still contaminated as when its full it reads 35 tds.
Anybody got any ideas as to what I could give it a good scrub and flush out with? else I'm looking at a new container or butt, but the the wheelie bin does me perfect, fits in my redundant airing cupboard since getting a combi boiler perfect, dont really want to have to fork out on something else. Any ideas anyone?

Some plastics are moisture permeable some are gas permeable, I don’t know what your bin is made from, but this may be the problem, stuff passing through the plastic or embedding its self in the plastic and then leaching into your water.

Go and get yourself a tank suitable for water.

this an interesting topic tonight because I learnt today that the only containers you should store 'filtered ' water in are ''food safe'' containers, as nearly all other ''plastics '' are permeable and will affect the TDS of your stored water.

So how many of us keep water in water butts? - which apparently is pretty bad!

I had no idea of that John, can anyone explain further? is an ibc tank food grade? would'nt of thought so. With a merlin I can produce the water quickly, its only 240 ltr bin afterall, but I dont think I've got all the oil residue out even with ammonia, maybe another solvent, white spirit, alcohole?
