I have a RO-Man 300 gpd running on 45psi  tap with no booster pump . The TDS  was coming up as 12 on the in-line meter last week so on friday i disgarded the resin and refilled. I also purchased a hand held TDS meter .Great , reading on in-line down to 5  and 0 on hand held  .turned all off thinking fine ,switched back on sunday night . Monday morning  in-line reading 9 and hand held 12 in my ibc, fotunately had 400 litres onboard measuring 0  Please help as according to postings from you guys I should disgard this lot .oh , also is the in-line meter reading reading the tds before it reaches the di .Any advice much appreciated

what size di vessel have you got and also do you flush the system daily

i'm not sure of DI capacity but it is 10" long.  I flush the system through once a week for about 5 or 6 minutes.

A few questions to ask yourself.

Did you refill with the correct resin? Demin and not softening. Is there any dirt or contamination in your resin filter? How old is your system, is it due for new filters or membranes? Was there a pressure drop on your mains supply? Is the drain restrictor OK?

there doesnt appear to have been a drop in pressure
the pre-filters are about  5 months old , i have got some in the garage so i could try replacing them.
Is it ok to use the water iv`e produced though?
Any ideas about the differance in the TDS readings of in-line and hand held?

Your TDS reading is lower on the hand held ,whereas mine is the opposite , I believe the final reading is correct as i tested some water i had stored from last week and it registered
000 and001  with the same meter,so i`m well confused.

The water you have produced, pass it through your de-min only and see if this reduces the TDS. If it does then your resin is OK and you can put your water through the resin & use it. If it doesn't then your resin could be duff. Resin should be stored damp, if it dries out it won’t work. Check the TDS of your membranes, pull the "pure" tube out of each membrane in turn and check each one, they should all read the same, if not replace the duff membrane. At 45psi you should expect about 90% reduction +/- 5%. The only other possibility I can think of is batteries in your TDS meters, dirt on the probes of the TDS meters or bacteria growing in the membranes. Sometimes if you leave the inlets & outlets open to the air you can get bacteria into your system, we always recommend that a valve is fitted to the inlet & the outlet and the system is kept under pressure when not in use, and its always worth giving it a run for a hour a day. Open up one of your membrane housings and if there’s any slime inside its bacteria.

clean out the housing, rinse the membrane in a sink of pure/ro'd water, as low a tds as you can get it, allow it to soak in the water for 15mins and put it back in the housing, flush the system again to make sure all the dirt is cleared from the housing and then run the ro - all in this should take no more than half and hour, check the tds out of the membrane after running for ten mins, tds should be back to normal, if not then you will need to change the membrane.

My advice is similar to JM123.

Take out the membranes, take out all the filters, put two table spoons of bleach in the first filter housing, slowly run water into the system until it comes out of the drain & outlet lines, turn off water, leave to stand over night, turn water back on and run for 20 mins. The bleach (chlorine" left in over night should kill any bacteria, by putting in the first filter & running it through you should have disinfected every part of the RO. Fit new membrane & filters. Fit valves on the inlet & outlet of your RO and keep it under pressure by turning the valves off when not in use, this is the beast way to prevent bacteria entering the system. Run the system regularly at least onece a day for say 10 mins. DONT fit new membrane until you have disinfected the RO or the bacteria will grow again.
