knee kicker
« on: July 19, 2006, 07:48:51 am »
Hi all,
I am looking to buy a knee kicker to keep on the van, as i have to go and stretch a customers carpet back onto the door bar that i pulled of last week by accident >:(

Do they pretty much all do the same thing? or is there a particular brand that works better for some reason?

It obviously wont be getting a lot of use, as it will just be to refit the odd carpet before i start, or fix any problems i cause.

Iv seen plenty on e-bay for about £30, anyone know of a better place to buy? or will i be allright with one of these?

thanks
Daniel

Hi daniel,I bought a metal one about 12 years ago for about £90 and it's still going strong now also bought a cheap one and the turbo dryer fell on it in the van and that was the end of that one ;D
                                        all the best

Get some instruction on how to use a knee kicker correctly.  It's not only easy to damage a carpet, but also you knees and your back.  I don't use one anymore for this very reason.

SAFE and happy cleaning :)

My next door neighbour is a retired carpet fitter. His life is a misery with back pain and constant sciatica. The Doc. said he will just have to live with it.

So, what can you do instead if you need to stretch one, or is there a 'safe' technique?

I got one and only used it once. Its worth having cos every now and again you need them and for £30 its worth the investment.
What I  did when I got mine was to spend half a day with the local carpet fitter learning how to use it,by doing this you also build up a realation ship with him and we both pass work to each other so the synergy benifits are worth while.

Most Knee kickers are pretty much the same apart from price

The metal ones that are sold in this country are mainly made by roberts and imported from the US. Other makes are orcon, gundlach and crain, all US companys.

The ones sold by B+Q are approx 1/2 size and are toys, I would have no use for  them.  They are made by stikatak based in ruislip , west london and are aimed at the DIY market

I personnally use none of the above but prefer to use kickers that have 'sharks teeth' instead of the normall adjustable pin type such as the above. As meantioned above these cost about £30.00 from argos compared to about £90.00 for the normall types. I have both, the cheap ones are FAR supperior to the expensive ones in my view and I have been fitting for over 30 years(cleaning is a sideline)

If you are going to use a knee kicker then the key thing is to get the depth adjustment right. Too deep  and you will puncture the backing maybe leading to filtration soiling problems later on, particularly on pale carpets. As carpet cleaners I am sure you have all seen this, not deep enough and you will be relieing on the nap inserts to grip the face fiber, this a recipe for desaster.

As far as an easy safe way to stretch carpets is concerned the answer is to use a power stretcher.

I usually carry two Roberts GT powerlok power stretchers with me at all times, though I don t think carpet cleaners need to go to these lenghs.

If as carpet cleaners you feel the need for a power stretcher then last time I looked HSS hired them out at about £25.00 per day. Judging by the photo in the catalouge they use the Crain ones.

You do need to know what you are doing with these.

Len

First of all sorry for taking so long to reply, I,ve been away on holiday and then was very busy playing catch up,, and had no time for posting.

Posting a picture of anything on the internet is way beyond me. Are you going to peter Reids day out at woodbridge? If you are I will bring one with me to show you.

Basically they are the type of teeth used on the cheap clarke stretchers sold by argos and others the tops of which have been shown in the posts above.

Red Carpet, yes these stretchers would be fine for using from time to time and would last many years.
I use mine 4days a week and they last about a year.
