anyone use a 5 section unger?
« on: August 05, 2006, 11:26:04 am »
Hi I currently use a 3 x 2 meter unger pole with home made brush attachment for the bulk of my residential wfp work, I have a longer 36 ft powerpole that I find heavy and less versatile for the few jobs where i need to go higher.
So I am thinking my cheapest option is to buy the 4th and 5th unger sections, does anyone on here use these? if so how do you find it? guess it will be a lot lighter and easier to remove and add length as required, my main concern is it may be very bendy/whippy and hard to use. So I'd like to hear from anyone who uses this and their opinions.
Thanks
Simon

You are right it is whippy and bendy. I will shortly be moving to glassfibre.

You may find glass is whippier than alu, try before you buy. If you want stiff you need carbon.

at that height your better of with a bit of bend, my 30ft glass bends and whips like a dream, you use that to your advantage.

I use the unger 5 section pole and I'm just about to add a 6th section then maybe a 7th.

I do find it bendy when using the 5 sections but once It's up there It's ok ;)

My theory Is that when I add the 6th & 7th section I can remove the number 1 section which Is very thin and this will help make the pole a bit more ridgid.

So In theory after I've added the 6th & 7th sections It will really be a 6 section pole.

Hi Clear Vision,
just curious if you remove number1 section how you gonna attach the cranked angled joint or whatever you use? number 2 section will have a different diameter

Good point!

I will have to cut the number 1 section down to say 10" and leave that In so I can attach my angle joint and tools .

If only I or someone else could come up with a solution to replace the locking cones with clamps that would be just tickity boo ;) The are a nightmare to loosen when your hands are wet and you've over tightened them :'(

think I'm going to extend my unger pole then, as its by far the cheapest option and my 3 section works a treat :)
can anyone suggest the cheapest place to get sections 4 and 5 from?
thanks
Simon

btw mathew ever thought about applying some kind of grip onto the locking cones? I'm thinking surf wax or some kinda rubber grip, alternatively although a bit anoying wear gardening gloves with latex grip, i get mine from the local pound shop.

I use the five sections of the Unger Pole, and at first I couldn't get on with the locking cones; but after some practise they're no problem.

Just make sure when you tighten them, you do it JUST enough; stop when you feel it 'nipping'.

Make sure you get spare threads too.  I think they cost about 60 p each.

I keep cadging spares of Ian_Giles and forgetting to order some.

I have a 42 ft unger - 7 sections I think - it came with my trolley system from peter fogwill.

Generally,  I use it as a 3 section or 4 section pole and this is what I generally take with me. It is fine at this level.

As a 4 section I can just reach a 3 storey block of flats with the thinnest section half extended. For me, any higher and it would be too whippy.

Except for doing the attic rooflight on my own house which takes six sections I have never used the 5,6,7 sections and I find it so ungainly and whippy that if I needed to use more than the fourth section with any regularity I would investigate a different type of pole.

I never extend the thinnest section beyond a foot or so normally and would rather add the fourth section to maintain rigidity.

It's a cheap pole, and I've used mine for 18 months and replace the cone inserts every few months.
It's a game of three halves!

Malc,

Where do you get the pole inserts from?

Ian_Giles gave me Peter Fogwill's number but it's disapeared into my box of letters that I should get around to going through.

hello again,
I'm going to order sections 4 and 5 from wintecs possibly but where can i get section 6 from? think i'd rather have that too so I don't extend them all fully and have a bit more rigidity.
Thanks again

Hi Simon

Give Peter Fogwill a ring www.window-tools.com he does them. he also does if you prefere 5th & 6th sections in fibre glass that fit onto the 4th section.

Hope this helps

Hi just an update, sorted out my pole dilemma!
I've made 2 poles into one.
my powerpole from omni was getting tired and the alloy gooseneck and large vikan brush was well heavy for domestics. I removed the first section and spookily enough section 3 of my unger slid straight in and adjust and locks perfectly. So sections 2  and 3 of my powerpole have effectively become sections 4 and 5 of the new pole, leaving me another 3 sections to make an 8 section if I really needed, I tried it just to see and it did work giving me almost a 45 ft pole, whippy but not as bad as if I'd used unger sections I reckon.
saved myself a few quid as well so I'll shut up now and go and get some beers ;D 8)
