Laminate floors lifting
« on: August 03, 2006, 11:40:46 am »
Hi all

Wondered if anybody has had problems with over wetting laninate floors whilst cleaning a three peice, have just had a depressing call from a job I did last week. It seems some of the flooring near where I was working has bulged up and they are going to have to refit the whole lot right through to the kitchen because its all connected. I did try to dry it as I went along with the terry towels I had used, also had the air mover on, but obviously not enough. I think that maybe I need a better hand tool, I am just using a standard Ashbys one at the moment.

Kevin

sorry about your mistake .

Why not put a plastic sheet down in future.
you could offer to refit the floor yourself may work out cheaper.

Thanks Neil.

Dont worry thats the next thing on my shopping list. The fitter is already on the job(£300) She only had the floor fitted last week.

Hi,

I was wondering if you really believe the laminate is lifting because you got it wet?

From what you have written, it didnt actually get that wet and you dried it.....  If its very new laminate, maybe the problem wasnt caused by you, but room humidity or bad fitting or a leak under the floor.

Just a thought?

Hi

Thanks for the advice, I have spoken to somebody who knows about this kind of thing and he thinks it may be possible if they were cheap boards. I dont really know how to prove it wasnt my fault. I am going to go around there now so maybe the fitter can shed some light on it.
Thanks Kevin

know a man who had the similar problem with a extracta machine the exhaust is on the bottom and the heat buckel and buldged the laminate and he had it on a pvc sheet. He was kicking himself as only brought machine into the hallway as it was raining!

If you get it sorted for £300 just chalk it up to experiance and move on. We all drop a clanger once in a while so don't feel too bad.  But deifinatly change your handtool!

pack of 3 large decorators sheets, cotton, £20 from wickes diy, put the furniture in the middle of the sheet, they soak up the wet

I have a feeling this problem occurs quite often. Happened to me about 2 years ago but only about 3 strips
" blebbed"...but hardly noticable. Offered to replace that particular area (not the whole lot), and she dropped the complaint.
Also, I turned up to clean a suite last month and the customer said she had actually had someone else to come clean it...he took one look at the laminate floor and WALKED STRAIGHT BACK OUT !!
Maybe this is more common than I thought.
Now, I clean all the removable cushions outside (weather permitting) and place a couple of heavy duty cotton sheets on floor when doing base/arms.

Laminate floor also lifts if insufficient space has been left round the edges..the floor tries to expand in the hot weather but can't so extra strain is put on the joints, causing them to bulge.

Also..from what I can gather lamitate shouldn't be laid on concrete without a waterproof underlay.

I am sick of the site of this awful stuff having lifted acres of the bloody thing due to water damage.
The cheaper ones are simply compressed wood/cardboard fibre with a photograph of woodgrain on the surface and a final coating of laquer. Why anyone woud want to put formica on their floor is beyond me. If any moisture gets into the joints on this stuff the backing will swell straight away.

You might want to to consider a closed in handtool, one with the jets actually inside the mouth of the vacuum slot, I use this all the time on suites and hardly ever get a drop of water on the floor.

Even if you do use dust sheets, it doesn't look very good to the customer if theres water all over the show, better to be nice and dry most of the time ;)

I used to refuse to clean a suite if they had laminate floor because the handtool I used(extracta) produced a lot of overspray.Changed my handtool and now use a tent groundsheet and dustsheet on top just in case but with the drimaster/cfr tools overspray is minimal.

I went to look at the laminate floor boards yesterday and they hadnt actually lifted, they had blistered(only about 4 of them)along the joins, the veneer had bubbled on the joints. Still going to have to lift them all though. Just think £300 could buy a really nice hand tool !
