They do work but they also hold the dirt especially grit and you just end up spreading the dirt all round the window  with a high possibility of causing scratches,we did use them on some solar panels but not on windows

How do you even know what pads he is talking about? 

Most of them are the same material  , we tried them on solar panels with lichen  on to see how they performed, they clogged up quickly, on glass they hold the dirt simple as that and could cause scratches if you got grit on them , regardless of make the same principles apply

I've been a tackle tart so to speak over the years and have bought all the pads and holders. And to be honest all have pluses and minuses. I settled on using white scrubber sponges from Aldi with the Unger fixi clamp. In the photo I used it to apply isopropyl alcohol to remove some silicone the installers smeared on.

The under fixi clamp fits on Gardiner Unger adapter so can use in any of my poles and also use it with 0000 steel wool on high level windows. Cheaper buying big was of 0000 wire wool for furniture restoration than the pads people sell.

I've used the bronze wool, coconut type pad, white Gardiner water through pad was useless, blue doodlebug pad etc.
