I think there's a wool/nylon mix here, but without feeling the pile it's difficult to tell.

Definatly a chemical spillage has caused this problem. There is residue left on top of fibre if you look closely. I've never known moths to infest like this and to such a degree.

great pictures crap paint job. i hope we get to the bottom of it as its iinteresting in the second picture there seems to be a lot of what looks like powder !!!? or is it just dirt.

on looking at the photo again i must agree with the paint spill theory as i dont think the white powder is  powder but paint residue . you need to ask her who painted the room and when if there are no moths

i know it rare and i think some are struggling to see that this could be moths, understandably,

but a have seen them do this much and more! amazing i know. you often find its in more than one corner,

Update

Customer rang previous owner of the property and it appears potpourri oil was spilt on that corner of the room some time ago then a corner unit placed over it.

i have also seen moth damage worse than this, but as it has been pointed out, there are several facts we are not sure of, ie the pile content ( i have never known moth / carpet beetle to munch away on man made fibre, is the damaged area underneath funiture, as we know the insect will only live in dark humid areas.
Steve, it was mentioned earlier, to be sure lift the carpet in the affected area, if it is insect you should see the lavea (dead or alive). They look like rice.

as i said in my earlier reply i still believe attempting to remove paint or whatever has been spilt has caused the damge.

The previous owner replaced the underlay and used a vast array of products to remove the oil that was spilt including turps,white spirit,vanish and other household products from under the sink.

The carpet is 80/20 wool mix.

Craig rice grains??The backing is hessian then some sort of plastic which is holding the fibres of the carpet.

She is now going to replace the carpet.

rice grains steve, i can see some in pic, top one, thats the lavea. they look like rice.

they must have used acid to clean it then
