over clean
« on: June 28, 2006, 09:43:41 pm »
we are all under the impression that a clean carpet last's longer and a carpet cleaned without any solutions left in it will not resoil and stays cleaner longer,

BUT ive been subing over the last year cleaning some verry busy pubs, when one of these pub's first opened it was cleaned every six months then every three, then every two weeks now every week,

so I was asked to look at it. I didnt believe that it is due to the traffic but maybee something the bar staff were doing or down to other sub contractor's but now after many tests I beleieve it's a mix of traffic and the condition of carpet as it's getting quite worn,
but could it be that oils from the wool are being stripped out on every clean aswell as the protection that has been applied and this is having an effect

Hi James, I think the question about the wool loosing oils is a misnomer as there is very little natural oil left after the wool has been processed.
We used to do a lot of pubs in the past for Newcastle Breweries. These were in the main very high quality Axminsters they would last about 5-6 years before needing replacement. They only had them cleaned as a last resort.
When the more trendier pubs started appearing they tended to use a lot more fancy carpeting along with areas of hard flooring. Lots of yellows, oranges etc. The areas bordering the hard floors used to get a particularly bad hammering where people were coming off the hard floor onto the carpet and the carpet was wiping the spilt beer and dirt off the shoes. One of them eventually had the carpet taken up after a year as despite regular cleaning it just looked awful all the time.

James,

I have been in the carpet cleaning industry for about 13 years.  The first 9 years i was cleaning pubs & night clubs 5 days a wekk.  When i first started most night clubs would have their carpets cleaned on average every 4-6 months.  Then suddenly the night clubs we were cleaning were been done every 3-4 then 1-3 months.  This all happened around the time that ALCO POPS and all the other arrived behind the bars.  Carpets need to be emptied of the high sugar drinks and all the other poope that goes on them.   We were asked to clean a night club carpet that was only 5 weeks old, i asked the area manager WHY?  He replied because it is really sticky and in the last week has gone quite dark looking (the carpet was red & orange). I booked it in and went to the club a few days later to clean it.  When looking around i did notice that even thogh the carpet was only 5-6 weeks old it was really sticky in certain areas ie by the bar & where the carpet met a hard surface.  I cleaned the carpet & was GOB SMACKED at how dirty the carpet really was.   The area manager met me on site as i was about half way through. He also was concerned about the carpet been as sticky & dirty in JUST 5 WEEKS FROM BEING LAID DOWN.  I asked if there was anything that could be done to prevent this happening so quickly i replied "yes,    STOP SERVING ALCO POPS & STUFF LIKE IT".  This was never going to happen so we agreed that the carpet should be cleaned every 5 weeks.  The carpet was pre-sprayed with an enzyme and rinsed with acid rinse.  I know you shouldnt use a high alakaline cleaning agent on wool, but to be honest in a night club or busy pub i dont think that it really matters as the carpet is going to get battered anyway with the high traffic and drink spillage.  If the carpet was left for 4-6 months between cleans the carpet would have been knackered within 2 years.

Richie.

Thanks guys just comfirmed my thoughts, it's just hard to get your head around it when a pub gets black top in a week and you were the one that cleaned it the week before, but this pub takes over £25,000 every weekend  :o :o
