FAO Spruce (van alternator test)
« on: January 24, 2018, 02:25:12 pm »
I've just done the test with the cigarette lighter volt reader you mentioned to get to test my alternator to see if it was an intelligent one.
So basically on start up it went from about 12v up to 14.5v pretty instantly(4-5 seconds). Drove it for about 13 miles on a mixture of back winding roads with around 3 miles of it on motorway type driving. The reading i was getting all the time while driving was 14.5-14.6v at no time did it every go below about 14.3v. Left it on tickover for about a min when i got back and it stayed at 14.5.
Would you agree i'm pretty safe in saying that it is a standard one and can use the simple vsr type split relay system with it ?
i was pretty sure it was a basic one and Scrimble also mentioned that it should be, but thought i would do your test to make sure.

in keeping with the love that CIU is showing at the minute i thank you in advance for your help and input  on this   ;D

Sounds like a ‘normal’ alternator to me, normal VSR should be fine.

Yes, you will be fine with a VSR or SCR.  :)

By the alternator charging at 14.5 to 14.6 volts, your battery is fully charged and the alternator is still working. So adding a Voltage Sensing Relay or Split Charge Relay will be fine.

The problem comes with vans having regenerative charging under braking or deceleration modes. Once the battery is charged to 80% the alternator's charge voltage drops to the low 12v waiting for deceleration so it can push lots of amps into the battery at 15.5v to 18v.

So you were looking for that voltage drop off and then surge under deceleration. Yours isn't doing that so acting as a normal alternator as Don says.

Anyone know if a  2011 Renault master is a smart alternator

Renault was messing around with regenerative braking on some diesels (the 1.6dci Megane was one) back in 2011. It was later added to other models, ie Espace and Scenic I don't know how far it extended into the van range.

Again, I would suggest you did as did P1W1 and test the alternator for yourself to see how it behaves. One of these volt meters that plug into the cigarette lighter aren't expensive and always useful.

This is the one i used to test https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N5I0J92/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
you can get them cheaper then that about £1.90 (but no usb ports) i got the one above as could get next day delivery and also able to charge phones, tablets from it as well.

clever idea

ordered one, would like a split charge relay but not sure what alternator mine will be on 13 plate partner
