Hose lengths ?
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:04:56 pm »
Is it true to say that you would get better flow /pressure through 70 m of micro bore than  with100 m ?
I ask as i am looking at a different way of working , i ran 100 m today with 30 m of pole hose on the end , i expected a drop in water but i also found that the battery was worked a lot harder and i got home with 50 % charge left , its normaly 75%

Does anybody mess with their hoses and lengths , any comments welcome as i dont want to chop 30 m off the van reel if no benefit is to be had plus the hose is all but new !

Sorry might not be helpful,  but why run so much hose out?  Is it down to size of the property or parking issue?
If parking issue i run a backpack // trolley with 30m of pole hose which works wonders.

Massive, like totally huge. Longer than most, thicker too.

So she tells me anyway.

I didnt expect you Nathan , thought you might be chompin carvery and muffins !

I need to use 100m for a lot of my stuff , but have a lot which only use 50 m , nature of the beast innit .
My new way to work is to run the microbore to the boundry of job then switch it to a smaller reel of pole hose , tried it today and it made a lot of difference to ease of work , all i need to work out is how much will be micro  hose and how much will be pole hose.

Im looking at 60 micro 40 pole .

To answer your question, yes you would get a better flow rate at the brush head with a shorter hose, and less strain on the pump, which means less battery drain.

I used 50m for a long time and there was noticably more flow, at this time i used a 4lpm pump and it was fine.

I then upgraded to 100m of hose, but the pump was inadequate, just a dribble so i went for a 5.5lpm pump

Just an idea (very good idea mind you)...If your longest job is 60m then cut it down to 60m and have the other 40 still on the van with a rectus fitting attacthed, then if you need it for a rare occasion you can snap it on when you like

For about the last 3 years I have run 30m of microbore on my reel with about 60 or 70m of Gardiners reinforced pole hose added to it. So about 100m in total. I've got the pure freedom controller which I run on 50 (half way), I get about a 10 foot jet of water from the 2 pencil jets and my 70amp battery lasts me 2 or 3 days. I love this setup as it's so light and easy to reel in. Never had a problem so far. Use about 350 to 400 litres per day. Maybe more on a longer day. The things I like about the Gardiners reinforced pole hose is it's yellow and it always lays flat on the ground, it's pretty tough too. It does kink and coil now and again but not too bad.
If you ever pop over to Bournemouth, you're more than welcome to have a look.

Thanks for the above answers , it makes sense now , i remembered that i had the old roll of microbore stashed in a water butt out back , i cut it down to 70 m then popped on my 30 of pole hose , the flow is almost the same as 100m of micro  , i am running on 95 though , which i thought was high , then due to another thread about pumps tonight i saw that most guys are running at half that , i suspect that they have 5.2 shurflos where as i run a 3.8 , this could be the reason , what do you guys have pump wise , and what do you have controllers set at ?

if you ve got a decent 5L pump like a shurflo you should still have a good flow rate with 100m microbore.i regularly use all 100m(at least 3 or 4 times a month)and the flow is fine.no problems whatsoever.flow rate 40 or 50.
price higher/work harder!

So to understand this correctly, theres no technical improvement to cutting your main hose (6 or 8mm internal diameter) and adding pole hoses (also 6 or 8mm internal diameter) other than its lighter for you to drag or throw around.
(Though i use a 5lpm sureflow pump)

Each to their own i guess, but then again perhaps when i get to my late 40's or so i might end up doing the same.

But for now my muffin n carvery eating (p@f) gives me the needed energy to walk with my hose on an holster so it trails behind me with ease. I must be quite fit as it doesnt cause me no bother, its not heavy to drag around either.
Its the little things which make it possible to clean more houses perhaps. No wasting time picking hoses up to drag back to van etc and an electric reel makes short work of winding the hose in.

Good points there nathan , i have done as you say for 12 years now , not with electric reel though , my situation is that i am very much held back with size and weight restrictions , perhaps a Doblo not a Fiorino should have been the choice , but saying that it is making me carry just only what is needed , i had a T4 before and when i got rid the amount of stuff i pulled out of it that was rarely used was just stupid !
My main reason for hose mixing is purely for ease , im fed up of jamming the micro in the pointing of bricks and having to walk way back to free it up , also the amount of tat my custies have laying around is ludicrous !
Yesterday was an absolute breeze , not one jam up at all , and the pole hose is so light its mad , next to the univalve this has to be the soundest upgrade there is , for me anyway , it wont suit all .

Nathan show us a picture of your hose setup.  Are you saying that you have an attachment to your belt or something like that ?

I use 5.5lpm 100 psi chinese pumps off ebay. I run them flat out with no controller just an on/off switch.. Simple and effective and cheap.

The holster slides onto a belt and then clips around the tap valve that i have on the end of my main hose, ready for me to click my pole hose into:

I have the holster on my left and then an old bucket on belt clip on the right, which I loop the hose into and then it simply trails behind me;

My pole hose is clipped in when I start in the morning and stays in untill I have finished at the end of the day.

Thanks for that Nathan,
gives me a few ideas.  Obviously you let the pole hose drain out  when you disconnect and drive to the next customer ?  I see Gardiner do a valved version of the the male quick release fitting.

Once again thanks for the pictures

Because my rounds are compact, i keep it all connected untill ive finished the last job.
The holster is just press stud fastenings, so there isnt any need to disconnect the two.
If i am driving a distance i just turn the pump off and release some pressure with valve tap and that works for my purposes.

Hope this is helpful or like you said, gives different ideas on how to do things
