online payment reference
« on: July 25, 2016, 10:09:09 pm »
Whenever  i ask people to use address as reference all i get is their name. Annoying as hell trying to figure out who is who.

They just pay into normal account. Im wondering if this might be problem.

Its even more fun with the likes of paypal friends n family. I get code names or fancy made up names ie, babymaker!
I have no idea till i leave a note for 2 payments and get a message that they have paid me, then they leave their name so i know. It peeves me that they blame me for not knowing  ::)roll

2nd, im fed up of people who no doubt pay all their bills by direct debit. Yet for some reason when window cleaner whi theyve known for yrs ask them to pay online, they stupidly say no ss they dont like giving their details out. The complete muppets!! I explain its me who takes the gamble giving them my sort code n a/c number but they still dont feel comfortable!!!

Click on the payment line and hopefully the line entry should open up and show you a reference; the first line of their address.

You can have as much information as you like, if Mrs Smith sends a bacs payment with the reference 'window cleaner' it's still going to be difficult to know exactly who's paid you.

Why dont people understand that banks do not give out personal information. If you click on the details and more info is given, thats because the client has remembered to do so.
Personally ive worked round it by asking for the client to txt me when they make their first payment and to leave me their reference name so i can enter it in my books. That way, i kno who the babymaker on paypal actually is or my "r2d2" client is as well.

I think you maybe right it happens to me too.
I use nationwide building society account.
even though some customers fill in a reference, they never show on my statement ( I think this is a ploy by nationwide to discourage people from using their accounts for business ).
I do as Nathankaye does and request text when first payment sent, that way I can record their details however they show up on my statement - sometimes its even been their partners account and a different surname to the one they gave me, even more confusingly if they pay in to my nationwide account from a nationwide account then all I get is an account number and not even their name  >:(.

For me the references would be worth £85+ easily. I would need some kind of system for identifying the payments, 50% of my customers pay by BACS, that would be many hours of admin.

My payment slips I leave with the customer say:

(Please use your surname, house name/no./road - in that order as far as space allows - as your ref. details)

So depending on what they are allowed by their bank if Mrs. Evans of 18 Cherrytrees Avenue pays me then I will get something like "Evans 18 Cherr" which is enough for me to identify. If its Mr Cholmondley-Warner I will get "Cholmondley-Wa" but no address.

But who really has a Cholmondley-Warner on their round anyway? Certainly not more than one!

And yes I sometimes get "Window Cleaner" or my name as ref detail!
It's a game of three halves!

the account holder / payees name is the reference in most cases, usually I only have an issue with bacs from another nationwide account as only an account number is given but I record that in George just the same. As nathankaye already mentioned  ask new customers to text when first payment made - as long as they do and you keep on top of things its rarely  a problem compared to giving away £85 of earnt money a month.

No, don't think nationwide do them anymore - probably their reasoning behind not having reference facility. Years ago I asked if I could have my business name added to account ( because had recieved a couple of cheques wrongly written to business name and not myself ) they wanted an opening balance of £3000 to faciltate that. Their way of actively discouraging business use I presume, afterall they are a building society but thats why I like banking with them.

In no way I'm I trying to come over as a 'big shot' but the reality is that with the volume of customers and therefore payments we receive just names or even text messages isn't really feasible.
