Yes Simon I'm afraid you have missed something BIG TIME and that is the safety of staff ( or people in general )

Here's a link to another accident

But, hey, I'm sure in your world it's perfectly fine to work down mines with no safety equipment,, drive without seatbelts and play with asbestos.

Darran

Darran you forgot ... send kids up chimneys, launch liners without lifeboats and walk on electrified railway lines.

I don't much care what the self employed do with their own lives but when they coerce workers to take unnecessary risks I view them as dangerous solipsists.
It's a game of three halves!

You will more than likely find that the boss had nothing to do with it, more like the employees taking shortcuts to reach
their targets and slack off towards the end off the day. ( talking about walking along the ledge )
Seen this many times in the factory where I used to work, guys would stop using the cranes and man handle the materials
into the machines because it was quicker, just to get a bit of free time towards the end of their shift.
Next thing they would be complaining about back problems.

Agree with you Sean that it maybe the employee doing it off his own back, but the employer would have to show written proof of training and safe use of ladders with signature from the employee, my guess is that there is no such paperwork, also someone would have been in charge, thus representing the employer.

I wouldn't have any problems if the guy was off a ladder with correct measures in place, or even a safety line for the way he's doing it.

The biggest evpye opener for me was I had to junk several sets of ladders and steps when I started to employ as they have to be certified and checked. Some of the work I do now would not even let us on site without the correct paperwork even for steps.

Regardless of what we think of H&S  and sometimes it's over the top, I acknowledge that,  but this company broke the law and was found guilty and punished, so no matter what we wish H&S to be the law is the law and we have to adhere to that

Never argue with an idiot, they will only bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience
