What method would you use to workout the cost of cleaning the seating area of a mobile Caravan Holiday Home.

IE a Static Caravan, with lounge dining area etc

Hi Ian, although for obvious reasons Im not going to get involved in a pricing debate I was wondering if you had done many statics as i believe you use a ninja, Ive been asked to price a smallish park an hour round the coast from us but im unsure about the suitability of the electrics on site, Andy

Ah f**k it, Id do it on an hourly rate, just work out how long and add travelling time ( if any ) in, I know there are people doing them around the coast between £60-£120 complete, Andy

I just tend to compare it to standard upholstery and charge accordingly. Usually easier than a suite as there are no backs/sides to clean. You could also offer to do the carpets free. Takes 10 minutes and usually Polyprop.

To be honest apart from tow Caravans I have steared clear I did quote for a Park last year but they were going to be one offs and that wanted it to cheap but have just had enquiry.

I was thinking of a hourly rate.

I can do both seating areas and the carpets in a large static holiday caravan in about 3.5 / 4 hours with a porty. I charge around £80 / £100 locally, more if adding travelling time. Sometimes have a problem with low amp electric circuits so make sure customer puts kettle on before you start!

we do many statics and normally charge a flat rate of around £80 a van for everything usually takes us approx hour each, (theres really not much to them!)

If you use a porty normally with long hose you can reach about four or five without moving.

Electrics are normally a problem because they are on low fuses so tend to trip out a lot, a very long extension is the answer upto the main office.

To make some serious money on the vans you need to encourage the site to have a lot cleaned in one go, we normally strike a deal where we go in around february and do around 25-30 vans and do at reduced rate and clear about £700 a day! - well worth doing in the quieter months

I'm cleaning My first static caravan on tuesday and wondered what the likelyhood of my portie tripping out the electric is?, also what can I do if this happens?

Barbara et al,

The only things you can do is:

Turn off your heater
Turn off and blank off one vacuum (if twin vac)
Use MS to do your cleaning and only use your machine as a clean water extraction.
BUY A TM!!

We do a few sites, some run on 5A supplies, so we avoid them like the plague, others are on 10A which can still cause problems, very few have 13A supplies.

Caravans (or Holiday homes if you're posh!!) are normally very easy to clean, we charge a standard £75 for upholstery and carpets (generally no more than 15-20m², only takes 1 - 2 hours max.

One thing to add, is that most sites will have the reg 13 amp supply just not in the actual vans, but often times in strategic places throughout the site, as they need this for themselves to power various equipment.

It's always worth having a few trailing leads so you can be sure to pick up some power at least from one of these power points, alternatively take a smaller back up machine just in case

Hi guys just to scare you a little 

You might reemember me posting a flyer around feb time for which I mailed to most main sites in the south west around Devon, I had a response but not great, this is the shocking bit I cleaned three parks localy at a very good rate £25 a unit carpets and upholstery  what you might say, but if you want to be competitive that was and expensive price, most people I was competing against were charging £15 a unit, I could clean around 30 a day so was a good earner but these sites have 500 units This is what most main sites are willing to pay, you make your money back with the club houses, if you can get any more take it and run a long way  £80 - £100 you be escorted off site pretty quick

For £15/£25 a unit I'd escort myself off site pretty quickly!

If you want to break your back for this type of money go ahead. If not let someone else do the work. I find working in the confined space of a caravan bad enough without the pressure of doing it for no money!

To do a proper job it takes a few hours and warrants £80/£100. Doing it for £15/£20 you get what you pay for......... £15/£20 worth of work!

even doing a 12 hour day thats one every 25 minutes from start to finish, inclusive of set up etc,I know im not the quickest but it would take me in the region of 2-3 hours a piece, Andy

Your right low prices and volume, I never said it was fun, infact by week two im stomping around looking more than miffed

But hay for £25 quid they get a splash n dash on the upholstery and good clean on the carpet, but they know this and happy with it, just wanted to put accross the commercial side of things

Ian im no supper Hero im affraid just doing what I have to do to get by, it's tuff when you just start out

But heres back the domestic work with plenty of tea and cake not rain and mud
