Any thoughts on what you can claim for using your home to work from. E.g. office, driveway shed, garden etc. Also heating, light, electricity especially for water heating. Appliances for washing/drying uniforms/towels cloths etc.
It's a game of three halves!

Get an accountant ;D

If you've already got one, ask him - that's what you're paying him for.

Hi Malc,

According to my last tax return..

Use of home £271

Water costs (electric for pump & heater) £480. I'm going to claim a bit more this year because turnover is up.

I'm not sure about washing etc though, although I have heard of people claiming for it...

You have to be careful claiming for working from home as it may trigger a capital gain if a dedicated room is claimed for office work if house sold, however I think HMRC will allow a reasonable amount. I claim £300 with a reasonable amount for washing/drying cloths, clothes etc. about £5-£6 a week. You don't have to specify what you claim for what just a total amount, as long as you keep a record of a breakdown of the amounts.

Last year, my accountant allowed £520. A tenner a week.
I hear that that may change this year though.

definitely get an accountant.

they will literally save you money as they know how to claim for everything you can claim for.

also they are far less likely to make a mistake that will result in a fine, or an investigation....

my accountant charges me £150 for my end of year
