That's why I'm reluctant to take someone on , I would feel it's my responsibility to supply work for them ,it's not really fair enough to just not give someone work with no notice in my opinion

It's not nice to be abused like that I 'spose but you as his...um...manager(?) have to make the tough decisions for the best outcome for the business.

Although, it does seem...strange, that you only found out you didn't have any work for him 18 hours before he was due to show up.
You must have had an idea.
Perhaps to alleviate the potential fall out, communicating your position earlier would be prudent.

I would no sympathy to anyone I give work to these days I have been more than kind in the past and got no thanks for it,it was taken as a weakness. I paid for rainy days early days finishing you name it,all I got was you are earning the money you should still pay me lol,I do it on a 3 strike strategy if I were to get let down on 3 occasions within a short timespan that would be it now I wouldn't even bother ringing em. There's a lot more people out there these days thinking that this ain't such a bad old job after all,it was a bit different before the recession but I think a lot of people have learnt that anywhere near £10 an hour ain't bad money

Probably your not in a position to really employ yet, not full time anyway, if he leaves then employ some one for one day a week to make sure you get the work you have, is completed in the week
