Terry,
Hot water extraction is the only way to go, you should not have any problems. Stick with a woolsafe product and do not overwet. If it is a tufted wool carpet it would be less likely to shrink as opposed to a woven one.
See, you knew it all along

Terry, you can use the wands and hand tools with normal extraction machines.
I have the cfr upholstery tool which I can use with my truckmount or portable, this is the best tool in my opinion. It allows the fabric to dry so much quicker, once you have one you will wonder how you ever managed before.

Terry
Nothing to worry about. Customer probably hasn't a clue what type of carpet it is anyway.
For cleaning stair carpets you need a tool which is going to give you plenty of flushing action. Using a tool which is primarily designed for cleaning upholstery can lead to problems with dirt wicking back from deep down in the pile.
When cleaning stairs you are in close contact with the carpet and it is a simple matter of cleaning and then making a few drying passes. Due to the restricted size of the tool end as opposed to a wand you find that stair carpets end up dryer than a room carpet and are less prone to problems.
