Protecting my investment
« on: April 02, 2006, 12:42:34 pm »
I used to drive vehicles from a fleet that were all fitted with trackers, they were a great idea apart from they knew how fast we was'nt driving unless we taped a bean can over the aireals (it does work)

I would like to protect my investment (TM), and am thinking of having one fitted as it will also reduce my insurance but what are the cost tp set up and regester every year.

some one told me a cheap way of doing that,

buy a pay as you go mobile (cheap one), hide it in the van, if stolen you can call 'find my phone' and they'll tell you the location for £25.

i was told that as well as trackers being pricey to buy they also want a fair wack when you need to use them, cant remember how much but it was alot more than £25!

A good idea but typicaly I live in the country and losse signal a lot of the time and would be my luck the battery would go flat or a sales man from YP would phone it at the time the van was being stolen and would steal the phone aswell  ;D ;D ;D

good idea though

All you would have to do is turn off all the aring tones and sms tones etc and hard wire a in car charger into the vans wiring somewhere and hide it some where nobody would look. With regards to signal it will be moving around so will pick up signal sooner or later!

I think that is a very good idea

During World War 2 it was common practice to take the rotor arm out when you parked any army vehicle.

You would be amazed how many vehicles were still "borrowed" by people with spare rotor arms.

And because almost all distributors were made by Lucas, one rotor arm fitted almost any vehicle!

No.... I'm not that old, I just remember my Grandad telling me.

Jay,

Wrap a long chain around the back wheels and padlock it to a fixed pillar on your driveway.

Just remember to remome it every morning before you drive off at speed, or you will be like those indians in the song, "Two wheels on my wagon," ::)

My mate Dave Atkin has bought a Merc Strinter he recons he's got that much room in the back of his van, he's going to fit a bed. I'm not sure if its for security purposes or for when he has a tiff with his wife?
Joking aside the mobile phone sounds a good idea, though I'd check it out first with your service provider.

A ortnight ago there were 2 attempted thefts withi 100 yards of each other on the main (only) road through our village, both ifor trailers, both locked and both came off of the van that tried to take them, one was full of builders kit which ended up over the road and trashed, the lesson being that security is important and money spent on trackers or any other device that either prevents your van going for a walk or helps it be recovered is money well spent, i use drop down posts, alarms imobilisers and have got nearly as much lighting as your average sports stadium but ive still suffered break ins, just shows that when the local junkie wants his fix theyre not really interested in being caught!
