top extreme section worn
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:30:09 pm »
ive had my extreme 25 since july last year(so 8 months used every day).the top section has worn away at the fully open clamping point.its now the same thickness as the sliding section.this creates problems as i have to adjust the clamp a few more times so the section doesnt slip when extended but then its too tight when collapsed.

whats the best way to build the area up?

i was thinking of lacquering the worn section 3 or 4 times but is there a better way?

many thanks in advance

They are a superb pole.
I get through poles though.
I have an 18' slx for the money I'd use 2:1 extremes

great poles and ill be buying another one when this ones had it.just for ease of use.they do wear quickly though.ive looked after this pole as well.

same happened on my SLXs after 7 or 8 months too!

but you cant beat high modulus carbon for an easier working day! ;D

I have re-laquered a couple of CLXs, using Auto Clear laquer, works great especially if you, apply ceramic wet lube after , gonna be doing a SLX soon, it's only 9 months old and gets limited use, but if you do them regular it keeps them nice.

Has this pole had smart clamps on from new Daz?

yes winpro.the smartclamp needs adjusting when fully extended to hold the section.when i collapse it back down i have to re adjust again as its too tight to clamp fully closed.so what ive been doing is not using the top section on run of the mill work.im just using it when needed.

You might be able to build it up with something, I'd probably be tempted to get a new section.

If the section has worn so much that it has run out of adjustment for the smart clamp (which would be quite worn) then it can be very simple to cure.

How to do this - open up the clamp lever and pull the section 1 fully out. The Xtreme poles have all been built with slightly more overlap area than they need from new. Because of this what can be done is to remove the upper joint stop tape and replace with fresh joint stop tape about 10mm below where the current tape is. Re-assemble the pole and you will now have a partially new clamping area.

It would be a good idea whilst doing this to check the condition of the lower tape wrap on the section as well - if this is worn and not replaced it can lead to more pole wear on the inside of the Xtreme sections.

I hope Alex doesn't mind me posting this.

My first extreme lasted nearly 18 months without clear coat and slipping sections. But all sections are now fully worn out. I decided to follow his video and tried this.

After i had done what Alex has done in the video i then used clear coat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArdGzztbvJ4&list=UUDuSOSphcEt3AbLXDAjH3IA

The pole is like new again, i will change it over to smart clamps as well.

One thing i will say though is i have a little play with any Gardiner pole i come across.

If i see a window cleaner i stop and talk to them, i check the clamps. 9.9 times out of 10 they are too loose and have play in them. Its not Gardiners fault its poor maintenance.

My current extreme is well over a year old again, and i just laugh to myself every time i see a "Gardiner complaint" even without clear coat my pole would be like this.

I look after my gear, regular lube the pole and flush it once or twice a day.

i have seen poles where cleaners are standing on the pole hose to try and get sections apart.

You can not expect the pole to do everything.

What i will say is, the extreme pole is like a F1 car it needs to be treated with respect and used correctly.

I am just about to order a few other poles, and even if i got 6 months out of an extreme pole i WOULD still use and buy them.

A lot people say i earn £100/£200/£300 a day then use ali poles and moan about £6 fittings breaking. Are they earning £100/£200/£300 a day ? Or are those figures on their BEST days.

Daz if you have the know how, rebuild the sections.

Think a F1 car needs a little more than a quick flush and clear coat.....  :P :P ;D ;D

At the end of the day if you dont wash the grit off your poles its going to wear quicker isnt it?

thanks guys!and ill try that alex! :)

i clean my pole hose after most jobs and flush it out once a week taking all sections apart.i will lacquer it again at some point.very busy for the next 3 weeks though. ;)

£520 does seem a lot of money for a main day to day pole but if i get 2 years out of it then its only £260 a year to use the best lightest pole on the market!

anyone whos not poled with an extreme day to day for few weeks just havent got a clue why we spend more money on these poles than other poles but i guarantee if you did you wouldnt go back to cheaper heavier poles! :)
