Getting Back into the swing of it.....
« on: March 09, 2014, 07:17:29 pm »
So that was it today, 9th March 2014 i restarted officlly canvassing. Focus this year is to conentrate on the areas we already have, and maximize bookings on those rounds. Already got 3 new customers on board as of tonight.

Hopefully this will get me ready for taking an extra van on, need another £20k at least by Jan 2015. Daunting task. I managed it when i first started up again, as i had all the time in the world to do it. But as i am prettey busy already its going to be difficult.

 :o

Anyone else got simular plans now the weather is lovely?

So what's your history since ClnineagPors days, Mark?  You had a pretty good business then, I remember.

(Mods please note - no harm in mentioning another forum, it's defunct now :'()

Yeah I did. I sold off my remaining interest in addlestone and weybridge last year, and replacing the work here in Woking and Guildford.

Wanted rid of the area from split of ex as going back to the area just felt wrong somehow. Apart from that though I have a good business again, and I'm now turning over more from the days of another forum. Really I could do with someone working for me now, but I want to be solid packed every day before I do it.

Im not sure what route I want to go down looking forward. Employing, subbing or franchise. Whatever the case I need to replace the work sold from addlestone and weybridge and add enough before looking at getting an additional party on board.

How is the franchise operations going for you.

I will be back on the canvassing trail myself soon.  It would be easier with lighter evenings as I have reservations about knocking on doors in the dark (I'm OK with it but homeowners may not be).  I have been leafletting but results happen slowly with that method and I need to start re-building my cash flow sooner rather than later.
Over the years I've had an unwritten rule that no more than 15% of my work will come from any one source and I have had a number of sources of subcontracting.  Well, last summer, the 15%er pulled the plug after 5 years.  Normally not an issue as replaceable but it was quickly followed by a 5%er and a 3%er.  More recently some smaller sources have stopped too.  Because of these sources, I never bothered filling my domestic round in recent years.  I used to have a full domestic round but when I switched to WFP some years ago, it became something like a 60-65% full round due to faster cleaning speeds.  Apart from a couple of smaller subcontract jobs and a bit of commercial of my own, that's what I'm left with - a 60-65% full domestic round.  Although subcontract work can be OK, it did leave me in other people's pockets to some degree but, it didn't put any value onto my own business either.
I dislike the micro-management that can come with residential rounds but it looks like I will have to swallow and get on with it.
I reckon another 100 residential customers will be about right and I may have to take on some unattractive work to kickstart it.

Fine thanks. I stopped recruiting when I got to six -  I retired in early 2010 and just do enquiry follow-ups and sort Franchisee problems now - my wife does the admin but we use Aworka so it's easy!

With my pittance of State pension and tiny private pension (30 years saving for £30 week >:() and my royalties, I'm better off than I was when I worked by myself.

Don't even have to "spend the kids inheritance" - enjoying the retirement, long may it last ;D
