DI Conundrum
« on: March 09, 2014, 05:29:39 pm »
Hi guys, new to WFP and at the moment and making pure water via just 11 Ltr DI's.

So, I was using the 1st one a week ago and had made around 400 litres when my PPM shot up to 20.  On the advice of others, I slowed down the flow (which was already slow) and gave it a good shake.  Best I could get it was down to 6.

So, I swapped it for my other un-used DI at the beginning of last week - I know your meant to put one into the other and swap etc - but I wanted to see how long it would last I made around 700 litres before it's now started to creep up again.  It's only on 003ppm but I can't get it back to 000 no matter what I try.

Is this 'normal' or should I be getting more out of these DI's?  Out of the tap my ppm is 190.

Would have thought you'd get a bit more than 700 litres out of an 11litre D.I but not loads more. Your tds is pretty high for D.I only, as i'm sure you already know your alot better off getting a R.O

Edit : frank beat me to it!!! ;D

Yeah I was kind of avoiding RO as I'm on a water meter and my water is already £80 a month.

Looks like I will have to get one though, or I'm gonna burn through resin!

40/40 the best?

Its technically £160 a month if you've got to spend £80 a month on resin!!!

40/40 would prob be best as you can adjust the pure/waste ratio to minimise the amount of water you use if your on a metre...

Tds after my r.o is 9-12 and ive got a 25litre d.i, use around 300 litres a day 4-5 days a week.
Not had to change resin in 10-11months (watch it go up tomorrow)

You could try emptying the vessel of all DI resin into a clean bowl and giving it a good mixing round by hand and then re-filling back into the vessel.
In my experience this works better than just giving the vessel a shake.
Although I would definitely agree with what's already been said.......you need an RO.

Don't feel you have to get a 4040 either.

I just bought a 450gpd from daqua and it fills into a 1000 litre ibc. Usually within 24 hours it's nearly filled the 1000 litre tank, I then decant it into my tank in the van and off I go, and the ro starts filling up the ibc again.

My water tap water is 075 ish, and RO brings it down to 001. Happy days. Only costs £180 from daqua aswell.

I use twin DI's myself, have done for years & my tap TDS is 70/80 PPM. There are many advantages to a twin DI only system but even I have to say that at 190 PPM from the tap you're going beyond these advantages & would be better with an RO.

That said, you should be making much more pure water than what you are doing. I can only assume that there is something wrong somewhere. What brand of resin are you using? Also, are you sure that you have the flow through the vessel going in the correct direction? There's an in & out, it "should" be marked on the head of the vessel but not always very obvious. One bag of resin lasts me 2 to 3 months using a 400ltr van mount daily.

I have looked at those, but from my understanding there is a lot more waste water than in a 40/40?  I am on a meter, so was advised to get the 40/40 - could be bad advise though...

I'm using this resin : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181274451090?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Flow is definately in the correct direction and my TDS meter is brand new (functioning correctly).  Puzzles me too.

Not sure what the 4040 are like but I produce 60-40. (6 litres of waste for 4 pure)
