Leisure battery, connected to an intelligent split charger relay so it charges off the alternator/van battery

a relay split charger is enough or still need to charge the battery sometimes with a charger?

Scrap yard battery £15 lasted 18 months they give you a fiver for your old battery so £10 18 months.
Replaced van battery before winter now using old van battery runs two of us all day no problem.

Split charger should be fine for the most part (especially if you get a decent 'ah' battery)
If you have a digital controller, just check the voltage output on your last job of the day just to check if it could use a top up from a charger...

I have been using a diy system where the pump is connected to my van battery for over 3.5 years and it works fine. About a year ago I started to notice that if I was parked for a while working, the van seemed a bit slow cranking, so I bought a new, more powerful, good quality battery, problem gone!.
Before going and getting a 2nd battery check the size and condition of the one in your van (and remember if your van has a petrol engine, it will have a smaller battery anyway), it may just be that it needs replacing. Also, there could be a problem with the alternator.
