l5 heater

Hi as you know been having trouble with my  5l temp heater if I take off the pipe to the main hose it fires up eveytime but connect it and it won't any ideas

Yer it will only fire at particular flow levels - try changing your flow rate up or down. (probably up)

I have a shurflow its been on 40 is that to low or high

 Just sounds like there isn't enough water flowing through the unit to fire it up to me. When you connect your hose it's probably smaller diameter and is slowing the water down.
