Does anyone have experience of this?. I have read of this, but so far, have not managed to find some proper info on exactly what is involved, how easy it is to fit, and wiring it up. I know that an immersion heating element is essentially a big version of what you get in an electric kettle, so, in theory, quite simple!. The elements seem to be quite cheap, I have looked on ebay, so if it is do-able, it would make sense. After all, if the water in my 500l tank is warm in the morning when I leave the house, because it is such a large volume of water, it will stay warm for most, if not all of the day.

don't do it your self get a plumber  to do it will cost you about £150 well worth the money then get some heavy duty cable plug in to mains leave on timer four 5 hours set at 50degrees job done dont do it your self

If you are handy with your hands do it yourself. Take a look at this youtube and see if its within your ability.

iTS NOT AT ALL. tHE ELEMENT INSTRUCTIONS WILL TELL YOU THE SIZE WIRE TO BUY.ALL TO REMEMBER IS USE A POWER PLUG THAT WILL DELIVER THE POWER NEEDED. i USED MY GARAGE FOR QUITE A WHILE. GOODLUCK MATE. If the lead wire is to thin it will get hot so get the right amp size wire.

I've done it, it really is quite simple but I would advise using a proper mechanical flange- not just cutting a hole, ramming the element in & bodging it up with a tube of sealant!!

The other this is to have a dedicated plug socket from your main fuse board/consumer unit!! A normal house plug socket is not designed to have 3KW run through it for 4/5 hours, I have melted two plugs & had two lucky escapes by this. Now I have a dedicated one from fuse board.

Iv fitted one to my tank, it's really not hard just make sure you order the correct
Flange to fit the thread on, is worth it tho. Costs about 3 pounds a night when it's on  all night and heats my 400l all the hoses and the van :-)

I've done three. One in my present 650L (Long element) One in my present 200L (Short element) and one in my original 400 (short element) which I sold to someone on here about a year ago.

If there is room in the tank without it being too near the sides then the long element is best.
