Transit van sills
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:03:28 pm »
Hi all

Has anyone ever had there sills done on a swb transit?
I'm weighing up my options and will be looking to get a quote later in the week and wondering if anyone may be able to give me a heads up on possible cost, and how long they might last for?
I know for definate that the passanger footwell, and rear sil need replacing, but i'm thinking to get them all done, hopefully preventing any problems in the near future?

(Its a window cleaning van, just to relate it to the section) :D

Many thanks in advance

Is it rust? Could you not sand and fill it yourself? Did mine a couple of weeks ago and its not as hard as I though it would be.

Yeah it is, but on the rear its turned into a hole on the underside which i think will need at least a plate welded onto it....
Bloody transits!!!great runners, let down with rust!!:(

Get some epoxy putty, the stuff that sets like steel.  Cut a thin metal plate to cover the hole and stick it in place. Just make sure all the surfaces are clean and shiny metal.

When you say stick it in place, do you mean weld or actually stick it?

Just stick it with glue, and if you can smear some along the edge of the plate to look like a weld it will be fine. Then paint over it with underseal, then brush up some dust from the road or the garage floor, put it on some cardboard. Then offer it up to the newly undersealed section and blow the dust over it. It should then look just like and old welded repair and no one will be any wiser and your van probably won't fall in half.

and if it rust u need to cut right back to good shiny metal then by a steel plate a get someone to weld it on then u can do the rest grind it dawn and the weld to get smooth any little bits you can use epoxy resin and hardener p38 is good or p40 prime it wet and try sand it spay it the paint code will be under the bonnet or on inside part of the door i got quoted £800 pounds to do mine i done it my self for £80 pounds now that's what i call a bargain ;D

yes you are right  but luckily for me there was no rust on sills just dents so i pulled the dents out with a slide hammer to get as much as the dent out and then i filled it with very thin layer of filler so it has no effect on the structure on the van so it s not a bodge as i had got tip and advice from a mate who does it for a living and even he said that i done nearly a pro job on it and he was very surprised how good a job it was i researched this for weeks before i touched it and i have done a cause in body work my self  to ;)

Thanks for the replies all
James - looks a good job that mate, the problem is like scrimble said, i'm a bit wary just to filler in the bits that need doing....
Frank - your a muppet :p

To be honest i don't really want to just 'hide' the holes, its either get the sills done properly so they last or get a new van....
I was mire inclined towards the new van at first but after a chat to a few people getting new sills done may not cost as much as i first thought and if lasts a few years it'd be worth doing.....

Would you just sort the holes that need doing, or get totally new sills done all around the van that way knowing that its all ok?

Many thanks :)

it all depends on how far the rust has gone if the whole sill/sills have gone i would get new ones but if it just a small patch then they can cut it out and weld a new plate on witch would be cheaper than a whole sill u need to have a look and see were the rust stops and that will be were u can weld on why i say this is u cant weld on to rust you need to find some good clean rust free metal to weld on to. ;D

yer i wouldn't fill the wholes  in if its got rust because it will just fall out its ok for dents to fill on sill but like u said i wouldn't bother if its got rust u will have to have new sills or have a plate welded i don't think its too much money for welding a plate im pretty sure it would be a m.o.t failure if u got rust on sills and they would most probably do a m.o.t weld for u but m.o.t welds are not great cause they don't do a very neat job. :)
