Old tile cleaning
«
on:
November 26, 2012, 05:49:29 pm »
I have been asked to get these tiles cleaned and sealed - see photos below. The property has gone through extensive renovation recently and there are large quantities of concrete and plaster across the floors. I am unsure if these are from the recent renovations or from previous (property is over 100 years old).
Can anyone tell me what type of tile these are and offer any advice on how best to clean (and remove cement) and seal - products etc..
Many thanks in advance

the tiles are 1920/30s are a type wooliscroft, a mild acid sold in most good tile shops will get the marks off, with a bit of elbow greese, as for sealing again a good tile shop will sell a sealer, but tbh these tiles are non porus as tiles go and you may be better using baby oil or linseed oil, ps was a tiler for 29 years

You can clean these tiles relatively easily:
1. Take a light long handled floor scraper and remove all cementitious lumps and snotters as we call them.
2. Pre wet the area and apply diluted Aqua Mix Phosphoric Acid Substitute preferably using a rotary scrubber fitted with a soft to medium brush then vac up and rinse. This will get rid of all cementitious contaminants.
2. Apply Aqua Mix Heavy Duty Tile & Grout Cleaner and allow to dwell for 15-30 minutes then repeat scrubbing, vaccing & rinsing as above. This will get rid of other contaminants such as dirt and waxes.
3. Finally seal with a good quality enhancing seler such as Aqua Mix Enrich N Seal or LTP Color enhancer.
Job Done!

Hi Rob,
Kevin has got it spot on, regarding finish, that would be down to customer. my preference would be a top coat seal on this floor.
Cheers
