cleaning my RO membranes, filters etc?
« on: February 07, 2013, 08:50:35 pm »
i've got a wfp wystem that came with the van when i bought it, and it's the same as the one shown in the pic:

can i, and if yes how do i go about cleaning the membranes, filters etc on my van mounted RO system, or do you just replace them when they are passed there best? and is there any other maintenance of the system i should be doing periodically.

also i've just bought a dual inline tds meter i was going to fit it on the input and output of the resin bottle, is this the best place to put it (i'm assuming it is but i thought i would check before i start vutting pipes? i've got a hand held tds meter that i can test my tap water with.

any advice appreciated, thanks in advance

First of all RO membranes cant be cleaned the system can be flushed best to do this first flush for 20-25 mins then see what the tds is .

If you it has not been used for a while a good flush might do the job , If you need to change the filters find out the size they will be 10" or 20"  .

With just having 2 filters i assume 1 will be carbon filter and 1 will be a sediment filter have a look at www.daqua.co.uk  under ro products then ro filters .

Their is some pics so you can identify which is which and change each one correctly , Then when filters are changed if you are able to produce pure water then you wont need to go to the big expense of changing RO membrane .

Hope this helps . Mike

Follow the waste pipe and find the valve, just open it fully.

do you mean while tap water is being pumped in, or just open the valve?

While tap water is being pumped in.  The membrane flushes by allowing all the water to go to waste - this washes the surface of the membrane.  When you close the flush valve some of the water is forced through the membrane to purifiy it.

You can buy a solution to clean membranes,a descalant. No one actually bothers though, they'd rather spend £250 on a new one

i see thanks.

last question, i've just checked and the valve you talk about is already partly open. should this be completely closed when filling up my tank with water or should it be kept partly open?

Adjust so you get the product flow/tds ratio that suits you....
Fully open = flush
Fully closed = low tds, slow producing

You need to find a balance your happy with, Adjust it until you get a tds your happy with and rate of product

Fully closed = low tds, slow producing

Don't you think it should be opposite?

High TDS,fast producing?

you should have a little screw to turn on or off at the end of your waste

thanks for the replys, yeah its the valve at the top of the waste pipe, i just couldn't understand how the amount it's open could affect the tds, i just assumed less water would go through the membrane.

so at the moment it's set at 2/3 of the way closed, is that about right?
