What about if you use longer bolts?
Drop them through the hole threaded end down, wind the nut on to start then get pliers or grips clamp hold of the bolt and wind the nut up until fully tightened?
Can be done..............i've done it.  ;)

Must have big holes in you roof support bars then, can't even get my little finger in mine to get any access to anything.

Seriously you have got a Berlingo aint you?
Near the rear doors on the support that runs the width of the roof there are 2 large slots (1 on left side and 1 on the right). The slots are probably 2" wide.
I drilled 2 holes close to the left handed slot within a distance that I knew I could get the bolts through by hand.
I fixed a soil pipe bracket (from wickes) with 2 x 8mm bolts as described.
Then I got a length of soil pipe which slides into the bracket and the other end goes and wedges into the shelf at the top of the windscreen in the cabin end.
Also the pipe is easily removable (just slides out) if you need it to be.

These are not the brackets I used but are the same style. For some reason I can't find them on the wickes site.
You will obviously need a soil pipe bracket the same size as the soil pipe you are using.

yer used that on my mates van, had to use those cavity bolts tho as his van was fully plastic boarded out all round as it was ex prison van

yer got a berlingo,

at the moment my poles have to sit from the back left corner to the front right corner becasue of the length of them as im still using the unger aluminum poles, and my longest pole i have has to sit on the dashboard padded touching the windscreen and it goes the right to the back doors! lol
got mounting brackets on the outside of the van for the poles but they only good well im working near the van.

be gettin new carbon pole soon tho.
