battery problems and split charge relay
« on: January 16, 2013, 08:53:03 am »
I think my 110 leisure battery may finally have had it.
The question I have though is as its trickle fed with a split charge relay is it possible that it could be draining power off the vans battery ? I ask because I have had a couple of cold mornings where I have had to jump start the van. I took the leisure battery out to charge it last night and although very cold this morning the van started ok.
Guess I may have already answered my own question but not knowing anything about split charge relaysI wondered if anyone here could tell me for sure.
thanks Simon

no the second battery should be isolated from the main van battery, the relay should only charge the second if the first is full.

there should be no power going to the second battery, until the relay clicks over to charge.

Check the connections on the relay. It should be connected to the auxiliary not the live.

I have had my 2 batteries professionally fitted with split charge.  Gone out today and they are both very low on juice! Obviously in winter and running other things on the van it is not enough and it seems that i have got to go back to charging them with a battery charger. As if it is not bad enough taking things in overnight to stop them freezing!

ok, thanks for the replies, "isolated" from the vans battery was the word I was looking for. The split charge relay was professionally fitted by an auto electrician.
I have just bought a new 110 leisure battery this morning as a matter of course as the last one was a couple of years old and battery keeps flashing up on my flow controller, so hopefully sorted now.
Thanks
Simon

Do you use a diesel heater as these are very heavy on batteries?
