Taking card payments...before a clean New
« on: November 26, 2012, 07:03:57 pm »
i noticed over the years a lot of emergency call out companies would take your card details prior to sending out a plumber, electrician, locksmith etc and it got me wondering if this was possible on one off cleans especially large ones.
does anyone do this,is it feasible
many thanks

if you have a card terminal, you need to tell the bank that you intend to take a customer not present payment and its before the works been done, before they allow you to.

I do for pest control call outs, the bank want to know your life story before you start taking payments like that. I have recently had to complete an 80 question questionnaire re how i use my terminal and how i deal with custies details etc....its all compliance bulls**t.  I suppose its all due to the growing trend in fraud etc  :-[

I do it.
Use paypal.
Get the customer to send money to your Paypal using 'friends & family'.
If its sent normally it can be retracted. 'Friends' payments means you get all of it (no fees) and it cant be retracted.
Not sure how happy paypal would be they aren't getting anything but for the amount it'll get used its worth it.

for customers wanting a 1 off clean (esp end of tenancy or putting the house up for sale) are asked to make payment
in advance via bank transfer or cheque (if enough time) or have cash on the day and i take it before we start the job
most are ok with this - had a couple that then 'cough, um and err'  and want to think about it or complain about the price or suddenly decide that they need it before the end of the day, but i suspect these (very, very few) are messers.

any payment made with PayPal can be refunded and I would never say this to customers not only is it unproffessional they would think we are dodgy as hell, do you honestly do that

I get a lot of one off cleans to send payment first by cheque or they bank transfer the payment using a reference number provided. The second is preferred option and is the one I use the most

At Ian-nope, friends payments are exempt from refunds.
Try sending me some money and then getting it back. ;)

lol nice try :)
if I called my card company it would be reversed trust me I had thousands of payment through PayPal and so many tricks pulled by people law into themselves they are just makes it harder I guess I still would ask customers to do it the way your saying it though :p

I can't unequivocally disagree with you but I am (now) 99% sure what I said is the case.
At any rate, the shysty customers wouldn't pay it so it'll save you the journey and/or agro.
I am going to try and pay and reclaim from a mate to see what the crack is.
Can report back if anyone's bothered?

@Ian Wicks-I've only forum'd for a month or so but you seem to have a lot of posts and from some of your posts a fair knowledge-what's your story? Are you the guy to chat with about growing my business?
