New job - best practice to clean this
« on: September 22, 2012, 08:10:46 am »
This is a 50/50 wool mix, chord loop pile carpet that's in a rented house and not been cleaned for years.
How would you treat this:

Are you sure that's a 50/50 wool mix?
That looks like a dirt cheap bulk standard multi purpose carpet.
Hot prespray, agitate (but not with a rotary), dwell and HWE in several directions.
Oh and tell the person responsible this is never going to look great as it's clearly quite worn too.

I would pre spray with shockwave leave 15 to 20mins  , put rotary on it with brush , which should remove most of the hairs , then put on a microfibre  bonnet which will remove the hairs. then finish of with cotton bonnet .

to hwe you will just cause problems good luck

I personally would avoid using a rotary on this type of carpet... the brushes with damage the loops and cause fluffing... you would be better using a sebo duo and using in the direction of the loops and not against them.
Experience with berbers is to vac the hell our of the carpet and use a pre spray which has a little more bite than you would normally use on a wool mix, relying more on a chemical clean than the agitation... Rinse using an acidic product in your tank.

I'll spend a long time with the Sebo Vac first. Pre-spot treat, HD-X pre-spray, agitate, HWE, post spot treatment.
4+ hours @ 60 sqm (whole house).

Depends how much your getting for it.

Prevac if getting paid for it.
Pre spray hot power burst.
TM hot extraction
Post spot

Easy.

I`d second powerburst. No point in fannying messing about with a typical rental carpet

Great video David but it now becomes apparent why your dry times are soooo long!! In that video you did not once lift the wand off the carpet, if you lifted it slightly after every stroke I'm sure you would find much dryer carpets.

I would vac, hot prespray mixed with an oxidiser if not already included, agitate, leave to dwell for 15 mins, then extract hot.

By that point you'll already be a hero, so amount of spotting depends on how much work you want to put in/they want to pay for.

Hi Dave,
Your video is really good.
You need to work on your wand technique at little. As has been pointed out, you never lift it off the carpet to allow the lines to clear of moisture so never get the true potential of your system, also you leave those horrible wand marks in it which even when you brushed it post cleaning they were still present in the background and that spoils the overall effect and can be the cause of complaints. A straight-forward and then straight back pass over the same area both with the trigger pressed and then move across two thirds of a wand width (so that each pass overlaps the last one) and the same again until you've covered say 8 feet. Then go back over the area starting at the beginning of the pass pushing forward from the beginning of the last pass this time without pressing the trigger just to dry the carpet and lift the wand at the end of each pass then start a new one. This sends the carpet in one direction without zig-zags being left. And when you brush the carpet, do it with the pile, not across it and you should completely remove any wand marks.
It's all a learning curve, mate, and I like your professional attitude.

Simon

It's a good video, the only edit I would make is to mute the talking at the end, and just leave the music playing - the conversation clashes with the music and doesn't add anything (It's obvious whats going on from the images).

Some great feedback from you all - thanks very much.  I'll post after shots if I get the job - I've quoted, but not heard back yet...

I'm pleased you liked the vid - they're a pain to make, especially when a mate is recording for you, using a new video recorder... and after a whole days shooting realises he's got the on/off switch the wrong way round! 3 hours of rubbish, and no footage!... and the rest of your mates are having a party, and taking the p**s all day :-)

Leave machine outside...it saves having to sheet up.
Treat all stains at the end...if the pre spray and extraction remove them it saves you a job.
Myself I never groom the carpet afterwards, I like the wand marks.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.
