Clean sills
« on: September 20, 2012, 07:44:15 pm »
Hi chaps, i recently did a first clean and it was pretty dirty around the UPVC frames (not old just dirty, as not been done for a few months) i charged extra for the additional work as it took a while.
Normally we would just wipe round the frame with a damp cloth as we do the detailing, however, if things need a good thorough clean would it be best to use something different (i use unger liquid for windows) ie separate bucket with a bit of washing up liquid in it ? i have heard ecover mentioned, is this okay for the fraames and sills as well or would the unger liquid do the same thing, i assume ecover is just similar to fairy etc.
Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Steve

is the ecover for sale in the same isle as the washing up liquid? (Tesco) as im assume its very similar. If it works well i will give it a try on the upvc (dirty ones/first clean), sounds like a few guys use it. As said i would also take the label off or put in a different container.
I will continue to use my Unger liquid on the windows for now as its not that expensive (you only use a small amount (100:1) might try the ecover on my own windows first to see the results before i use it on custys - thanks guys  :)

thanks Mikey, do you have to add the vinegar? (im sure that it adds to the cleaning potential as vinegar is good at cleaning most things) my concern would be how much vinegar per say 10 litres of water and what type of vinegar is best. I wouldnt be wanting to nip into the chippy at dinner time and splash a bit in my bucket at the same time!!! ;D

I think there is a difference between the dirt that Ecover will remove and the stained grime that tends to be the result of years of being left.

If its this staining that you are talking about, then Ecover will not remove it. This is hard graft and you will need something like Doctor Power (also from Tesco's) and a scouring pad. Astonish paste also works well. Whilst some of these stains are polution related, I have found the worst is the black staining that come from old rubber seals - clean the frames and a month later they are just as bad.

This isn't part of a normal window cleaners job and if it's expected as part of it, then let the customer go. This takes a lot of time and needs to be charged for accordingly.
