does my 40" membrane need changing?
« on: July 25, 2012, 11:58:37 pm »
Over the last few months my TDS output has risen from 20 and now cannot get it under 30 after the membrane.

I haven't noticed a drop in water production though.  Is it likely that the membrane is on the way out or could it be something else?

Any advice appreciated.

Do you flush the RO sometimes?

About 2 years but has only been seriously used for about the last 18 months.

Before you write the membrane off as underproducing have you checked you incoming TDS to see if this has changed, just a thought?

Yes I keep an eye on the incoming TDS for fluctuations but there hasn't been anything really.

I should say when I first started I didn't change my prefilters (2 x 10") for over 12 months, albeit I wasn't full time WFP then.  Could that have caused some premature damage to the membrane?  I now know that they should be changed 3-4 monthly.

do you normally see a drop of production rate when the membrane is on the way or does the tds simply rise?

Not sure what the 'norm' is Mike, but we accidentally bypassed our pre filters not so long ago and the membrane went bang almost immediatley. TDS went up through the roof and we never got it back down, just had to replace it. I assume the chlorine in the water killed it.
