Is it possible to clean stairs with out a stair tool?

Wondering if its possible to clean stairs with a normal carpet cleaning wand or must you get a dedicated stair tool attachment.?

use hand or upholstery tool.

I do commercial stairs with a wand but most domestic staircases will also have marks on the riser. As a proffessional you really should have the right equipment to tackle  the work you are charging for and a stairtool is a very basic piece of equipment.

Be very careful using an upholstery tool on stairs if you also use the same tool on upholstery. They easily get nicked from the gripper rods and these nicks can snag a fabric. I know a guy who did this and it cost him 2k for a new sofa.
